Just got an iPad and we're trying to connect it to our 2WIRE network. The connection works great while close to the router but once you get about 20 feet away it fades. We haven't been able to figure out how to upgrade the firmware on the router (installed in 2010), but we think that if the router can be upgraded to support 802.11n rather than 802.11b/g, then maybe our problem will go away.
Any ideas?

Well....going to "N" in the 5 gHz band might just exacerbate the problem because the higher the frequency....at a given transmitted power and receiver sensitivity....the shorter the range.
You might check the power setting on the RG. Go here
and click on the Wireless icon. Then scroll down to the place where the power setting is located. It should be on maximum. If it is not....change the setting to maximum and save it.
My RG is located on the west end of our home in the computer room.....my wife's recliner is in our living room at least 40 feet away from the RG and the signal has to pass through about 4 or 5 walls. Her iPad worked very well with the router in the U-verse RG. I've changed it now because I wanted "N" 5 gHz service on my home net for my laptop. But she still has no problem with using her iPad wirelessly on b/g.
So check that power output. If it is already at maximum.....well then you might give consideration to an external wireless router. The one I purchased is the Netgear N600 dual bander. Picked it up on sale for $80. Set up is so simple a cave man could do it. You simply use that link above and turn off the wireless service inside the RG. Then....run an Ethernet cable from the RG to the input of the new router. If you have a desktop that is connected via cable....just plug it into one of the Ethernet ports on the new router. Detailed instructions come with the unit. Everything is self contained.....no software to load onto your computers or into your iPad.
There is also the possibility that you need a new RG. The wireless router has been known to fail in these units. Heck....I had one go up in smoke two or three years ago. The RG kept right on working for TV but the wireless was gone and the whole unit had to be replaced.
Hope you can get the problem solved.
