I am trying to extend the WiFi range in my home and bought a Netgear WiFi Range Extender to boost my signal thoughout the house. I am trying to use my Kindle Fire in my livingroom and my ATT modem is on the other end of the house. I can connect my kindle to the extender, but there is no connectivity. Can I connect an extender to a 2WIRE modem?

Hi,
There should not be an issue using the extender with our equipment. Does your Kindle Fire work when you connect it to your regular 2Wire modem's wireless signal without the extender, and if so does it get online? If yes you may want to re-configure your extender. Please hard reset the extender, when you connect to it with a laptop/portable device and open an internet browser it should take you to - www.mywifiext.net - this will allow you to configure the extender. Their should be an option to keep your router's security settings, this way you only need one password to log onto your wireless. Please let me know if you have other questions.

I too just bought the Netgear WN3000RP Universal WiFi Ranger Extender based on recommendations from Uverse technical support. According to them, I have an unusual number of wifi devices on my network--a couple of phones and a couple of tablets is unusual?
I sucessfully set the extender up, and can connect to the [regularSSID]_ext SSID, however, I have no Internet access. Please help. I've spent a few days trying to get the wireless range extended with little success (first attempt was trying to use a wireless router as an access point).
I'm very disappointed in the poor WiFi quality of the 2wire RG (3801HGV) and wonder if At&t really thinks their RG is keeping up with technology demands.

I did all of that. The Kindle works just fine with the 2wire modem, but it is just a liitle too far when I'm in the livingroom, I keep losing signal. I did reconfigure the extender like you suggested already but I'm having the same issue as the reply below me, it connects with good signal but will no connect to the internet. (limited or no connectivity)

Hello again,
I apologize you are experiencing these issues. I have gathered information and found that the most likely cause of the issue is due to the encryption type for your wireless security. The extender lights are showing they are connected to your router but in fact it is not. That is why even when you get connected to the extender you still have no internet access. One way of making sure that the extender is connected to your network is to remove wireless security on the network, hard reset your extender and see if you gain internet access. If this works then it is definitely an issue with the encryption type. You can then setup your wireless security in your 2Wire with WEP or WPA, please use this article if you need instructions >http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB4102

Hi,
AT&T does not currently sell a wireless range extender.
Please let me know if you have done the following:
1. Disable wireless encryption on 2Wire
2. Hard reset extender
3. Make sure that without encryption you still gain internet access connected directly to the 2Wire
4. Reconnect the extender having it search for wireless points
5. Check extender to see if connected to internet.

I hard reset the extender.
I am pretty sure it connected while it was disabled, and then it disconnected and I couldn't get it back.

Hi,
Alright so when you say it connected when you disabled the encryption, this means you verified that when you were connected to the extender you were online correct? Now when you say it disconnected I don't quite understand, do you mean the extender disconnected from the router? If that is the case than it may not be getting a good enough signal where it is currently located. Did you try moving it after it disconnected? We need to make certain that the extender works first and foremost before we can troubleshoot anything else. Please verify that it connected and you can get online with the extender. If not then it's possible that the extender is not functioning properly.
Thank You,
JustinF

was wondering if this issue has been resolve yet. I just recently got a netgear extender, and an connect to the internet, but I continue to get blocked by my 2wire. I am still able to communicate and see all the devices on the home network side, but I can not get out to the net. Now to re-allow internet access, all have have to do is use any device connected to the extender and access the 2wire (192.168.1.254) and then I have Internet access again. I do not have to change any setting, just access it through the extender. It almost feels like the 2wire is blocking the extender as it does not think it has permission. So I set the extender up as the device that is allowed to handle inbound traffic. To summarize, Ext working, can see all devices connected by Ext, internet open, then blocked by 2wire, access 2wire through Ext, internet open again.
Please advice
Thanks
Aric

I ran into this - the problem was the range extender was too far from the residential gateway - I could connect to the range extender but the range extender could not reach the gateway.... Use your iPad (whatever) to find a spot between where you want service and the gateway that has at least 2 bars pref. 3 bars (it needs a strong signal to "repeat" or low speeds.....).
I also found most of the inexpensive low-end repeaters overheat. The ammount of data for U-Verse TV is just too much for them to handle. You may need to go to a Netgear Universal Dual Band WiFi Range Extender (WN2500R)
Quote from Amazon:
I have AT&T U-verse for wireless internet. The wireless modem AT&T supplied works great on one side of the house where my ps3/360/Wii are, but not the other where my wife's graphic design computer is. I have no desire to run ethernet cables throughout the house. So I was in the market for something to amplify the wireless signal and to make my wife happy, who wants a computer with no internet? Many signal boosters are not compatible with U-verse and after talking with AT&T via customer support they recommended Netgear. I followed the instructions for installation and the entire process took less than 10 minutes (literally). My wife's computer now connects to the Netgear booster directly instead of the wireless AT&T modem. The signal strength went from 2 bars to full bars. Her internet speed increased significantly. It worked as expected, no issues at all.

My gateway is a 2WIRE 3801 HGV. I tries the low end Netgear range extender, and had the same issue, ie. the extender appears to be connected, devices see the new network with a strong signal. However, I cannot get to the internet.
Has anyone come up with a fix yet?
Since I need the range to be extended, I would appreciate knowing if the 2WIRE 4111N would give me a better range? My other thought was adding another router. Opinions sought on these two options.

OK, first off, forget the 4111N, it will not work on your service. The 4111N is for ADSL or ADSL2/2+. Your service is VDSL.
What is the model number of your Netgear extender?

Thanks for the info about the 4111 router, I was hoping to find an AT&T router with "n" wifi. I already returned the extender, it was WNR1000RP.
