I've taken many hours during the day to study and highlight the steps suggested to correct the problem. As I began to grasp the five steps listed as the solution to the issue; it became evident that this is what I'd just paid an IT person to help w/ on July 31(Saturday) He had helped w/ several other issues also. The PC on the network running Win XP had been loaded w/ All-in One software as it was reinstalled after adding a new AT&T 2Wire Gateway (DSL2701HG-B) . My Laptop w/Vista also reinstalled w/ All-in One software and hooked up in Home network as other PC was to 2Wire unit with Ethernet wired setup. Steps in STEP TWO assigning a static IP address to the A-in-One did not work for me ,but I was able to print off network configuration page. I found on the hardware listing of imaging units two different devices one listed as HP Officejet 6300 with an IP address entirely different from the second device that matches IP address w/ HP Network Configuration Page. As I stated in an earlier e-mail my skill set is limited to where I'm hesitant to rearrange IP settings after seeing the two different devices with one having an odd address. I'm absolutely sure the IT fellow installed the correct software properly ;I'm able to print from my laptop to printer, scan from All--in-One to Win XP PC then send as attachment back to my laptop. Fax set-up seems to be ok; I don't fax very often. I even was able to scan a document to paint ---but not good trying to do anything with it then. well, for one, there are 2 kinds of static ip's. first is single and the other is multiple static where the ISP (at&t) would give you ranges if you have one. you cannot assign single static ip's to each device. this is your network's ip address. you can do assignin IP addresses if you have that multiple static ip. as an IT person, we do not recommend to rearrange your own ip address. you will get disconnected to the network if you do that. if you are trying to setup a home network, the essential is single thing: name of the network. that's it. you do not need to configure things. windows has a preinstalled program for network.

It's possible the static IP address the HP tech is talking about is one within your own network. If you use a router, and all your components are connected, wireless or wired to the router, each one of them has its own IP address RELATIVE TO THE ROUTER - not relative to your ISP. Only your router, under those circumstances, will have an IP address relative to your ISP. The router will more-than-likely be 192.168.1.1, and all other components will have numbers indicating they are part of the router's network. Setting a static IP address under these circumstances, is a snap. Just tell the router what you want the other components to be (192.168.100.101 for instance, or 192.168.100.105) Just make sure you keep track, since you can't assign an address to more than one component. This will make it easier on you later on if you have to do some troubleshooting, since you'll know what's what. If you let the router assign IP addresses it's possible they will change each time you reboot - for any reason. To test if you have your router as I've shown above, enter 192.168.1.1 on the address line of your browser (if it's not Firefox, it should be!). If your router is set up like I've shown, you'll get some pages that describe everything about the router.
