I just found this forum and see that I am having the same issue that many others have. My internet light flashes green and sometimes goes out numerous time an hour. It is so bad now I am afraid to make any kind of transaction. Over the past year I have reset, unplugged, moved my Westell 327W numerous times. Is Comcast a better choice south of Atlanta? This is my connection and system diag. log that is over an hour long.

Hello JaneNC,
Please accept my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you. There are many sources of regular Intermittent Connection problem. It could be a problem with the modem (unupdated firmware), Internal Connections like filters and wiring, non-persistent sources of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) like electrical devices, cordless phone, satellite dishes with pay-per-view and Neon/fluorescent/halogen lights too close to the modem, Viruses, Spywares and computer issues or your connection from residence to the DSL box outside your house or what we call DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer).

I have been an AT&T DSL subscriber for at least six years and I have noticed that around US holidays the intermittent connection problems are far worse. I had several outages on Memorial Day this year and the day afterwards, and also on the Fourth of July and on July 5. Yesterday my connection was down for a full 90 minutes, when I was trying to work. I dutifully called the AT&T Customer Service number (1-877-722-3755) last night and here is how the conversation went:
AT&T: How can we help?
Me: My Internet service has been out for the last 90 minutes. Can I report an outage?
AT&T: We will check your line connection. (Literally 3 seconds later) There is not outage in your area. Have you rebooted your computer and modem?
Me: Yes. I have for the last hour and a half.
AT&T: What modem do you have?
Me: I have a Belkan wireless router and an Actiontec modem.
AT&T: Since you don't have an AT&T modem, I'll need to transfer you to our for-fee tech support for non-AT&T hardware.
Me: I don't need a new modem. I just need to let you know there is an outage in my area.
AT&T: There is no outage. It must be your modem.
Me: It probably isn't my modem. It has worked fine for two years and all day today, with exception of the last 90 minutes. I think it is your service line.
AT&T: (Transferring): Hi, this is *Agent* What is your technical issue?
Me: I have no technical problem. The problem is I have no Internet service. It has been down the last 90 minutes.
AT&T: And you have a non-AT&T modem which we do not support. Do you want me to send out a service professional to try to get you back online?
Me: No. I just want you to check the line connection.
AT&T: We have and there is no problem.
Me: I don't believe that a 3-second line check will indicate any kind of problem.
AT&T: It will. If you will give me your credit card...
Me: (Hung up.)
And within an HOUR my Internet connection was restored and has been up ever since.
Let me say, AT&T: This kind of "customer service" is abusive. It assumes completely up-front that the customer is at fault and there is no way that AT&T could have any kind of service outage.
I am a 25-year database programmer and understand how to troubleshoot technical problems. I have maintained the same office setup and connections for months, perhaps years, so I know when something such as an outage has occurred. And, pamelaz, I know completely how to set my online filters, don't have any satellite dishes, no pay-per-view, no neon/fluorescent/halogen lights in my office, no viruses, no spywares and a top-of-the-line computer.
Today I am investigating Comcast and see whether their "customer service" is a little bit better (it won't take much). I have outages about five or six times a year, and I dread each time about calling "customer service" to report the problem. But I feel abused as a customer and I just don't need it anymore.
My question to this forum is: Does ANYBODY have a good phone number that I can call next time I suspect there is a service outage that I can report to AT&T? Is there any AT&T number where the technicians can actually trace a line, look for a service outage? I just don't believe a customer service rep in India can do that tracing in three seconds.
(And by the way--I purchased an AT&T modem last night that I'll keep in its box so if the "customer service" rep asks what modem I have, I'll read off the box and tell him. We'll see if I get more service after that.)

After trying all the steps mentioned above, if the intermittent connection issue persist, it is recommended that you contact the AT&T voice technical help desk at 1-877-722-3755 (open 24/7) and troubleshoot according to their recommendation, if require they will perform a line test on your AT&T DSL line and will do the needful for you accordingly.

The problem is AT&T can't seem to let their service play well with routers that you don't buy from them. Coincidence? I use the IFITL service from the old Bellsouth. Doesn't use a modem, has a direct fiber optic line straight to the system. So no bad wires, no bad jacks, no modem problem or anything like that.
My linksys router definitley has the latest firmware and is configured correctly, but I still get little hiccups in the line. Disconnect for about 3-6 seconds then reconnect. Just long enough to boot me offline if playing a game or stall out my browser if I happen to click a link during the downtime.
Problem will go away for a few months then pop up and they cannot fix it.

Had the same problem with intermittent outages, weak wireless signal , and a very poor downstream speed (<400 kbps). I use a 2Wire modem/wireless combination and after reading all these posts and talking to AT&T help personnel - who said the poor download speeds were not caused by something in their lines. I gotted jacked up and starting working on a resolution my ownself. I went out to the exterior phone box at my house and plugged my 2Wire into the jack out there - low and behold - my downstream speed was 2.99 Mbps. I pay for 3.0 Mbps so OK - maybe the tech was right - the problem is inside my house. I went in and started unplugging phones. I own one old wall mounted phone and three portable phones. I unplugged all the phones on the first floor and re ran the test and my downstream speed was 1.7 Mbps so Ok I have one more portable upstairs - I went upstairs and unplugged it and tested the speed again and downstream speed was 2.99 Mbps. I placed the 2Wire back in the location I had it when I was getting <400 kbps downstream speed retested it and got 2.99 Mbps. So okay maybe the tech on these boards know what they are talking about - interference is something to worry about.
Now the range problem- keeping all the phones unplugged - I took my daughter's MacBook and went downstairs, leaving the 2Wire where it has always been located, Got good wireless signal, pulled up Youtube and ran a video uninterrupted, pulled up Netflix and watched a portion of the Office with no interuption (vast improvement). Next issue was my wife's IPAD - seldom worked when she sat in her favorite chair in the den - got a faint signal and was able to "surf" the net - not great but an improvement.
Finally, the intermittant outage problem - well it has been two days & I haven't got the red flashing light of death yet - and my daughter was on the net for about 3 uninterrupted hours last night - all the phones are still unplugged- no compliants from her, no phone calls for me . I'm happy she's happy.
I did go out last night and buy a new modem and NetGear wireless-n router (dual channel, range max, operating at 5Mhz)?)). I believe this frequency is outside of the frequency that the portable phones operate at. I did this hoping to improve the signal to my wife's IPAD. I worry the IPAD issue may be related more to the strength of the IPAD's wireless as opposed to the strength of the wireless router. I also bought separate pieces of equipment in case I want to migrate back to COMCAST. i can ditch the dsl modem and keep the NETGEAR router. It will be interesting to see if this little foray has solved all my dsl problems.
The next decision I need to make is what to do about my phones.

I too have had ALOT of problems with AT&T. 4 cities, 4 different modems, 4 different routers, SAME PROBLEM.
First a little about me. I am the owner of a VAR company that handles Loss Prevention: Cameras, Point of Sale Systems, etc, and I have been working with DSL professionally for over 10 years now. There is DEFINATLY something strange going on with AT&T recently.
At Home, we had no connection issues for 2 years until uVerse moved into our area. At first they kept saying the shoddy service was because of infrastructure upgrades, but this has been going on now for a year, with it getting EXTREMELY bad the last 2 weeks. Any time I talk to a tech, guess what! They ALWAYS suggest upgrading to uVerse.
Also within the last 2 weeks 3 different clients in 3 neighboring cities have also started having the SAME issues. For one of them I ran a new line from the modem to the phone box (using a cat5e cable) and while it helped, it was not a cure. Now it still drops CONSTANTLY, but at least it reconnects MUCH faster. I looked at the Technician Readout from the modem and sure enough it was on AT&T's end. Same with the other 2 clients.
One thing I noticed at home, as well as at the client's (2 of which have GeoVision remote surveillance installed and set up), is that anytime the bandwidth usage maxes out, the modem ALWAYS disconnects and tries to reconnect.
My theories:
1) They are prioritizing uVerse customers and/or traffic server side.
2) Their load balancing system is wacked. (and switching servers WAY too much).
3) They're PURPOSELY trying to cut back on bandwidth usage and/or trying to force upgrades.
4) They're attempting to block ANY traffic other than "typical" WWW traffic.
5) They started a bandwidth quota WITHOUT INFORMING CUSTOMERS.
6) Their infrastructure can't handle existing customers (especially now that school's out and the kids are all home).
ALL of these potentials are very shady and not good business practice. It’s been making me and my company look bad (although admittedly it has been getting me ALOT of business). I have already started suggesting the move to cable to ALL my clients. I’m printing this thread (as well as others) to help accomplish this and to show that they are not the only ones with this problem but just about EVERY AT&T DSL SUBSCRIBER.
What HAPPENED to you AT&T? You used to be the BEST, now you're WORST THAN THE REST!!!!

I have the same problem and it's making me crazy. Since I only have internet (dsl) service with ATT and not TV and/or phone, I cannot pay my bill online or log in to use their 'chat' support, because I don't have an ATT phone number. Tried the account number, but that doesn't work either.
I called a few days ago and they ran their tests on my line and it is fine. Big surprise. So I am SOL. Sometimes my internet goes out every 5-10 minutes and I have to constantly reboot my router! I have VOIP phone which cuts out every time this happens, which is upsetting to me as I am trying to get a job and am missing calls and/or cannot place them. I'm also worried that if I every have to dial 911, the dsl will be down and I'll have to wait for a reboot!
I'm so aggravated with this, and ATT doesn't care because I'm just a little-bitty customer with dsl only - who am I kidding, they wouldn't care if I were a big customer either......

I have been having this issues for ever it seems. Not only does the connection drop off constantly but I also have a very weak signal at times in one of my rooms in my house through wireless to my laptop. I have an old 2wire modem and wonder how do you upgrade firmware? should I buy a new modem? should I chage providers? I seem not to have much luck with tech support. There is either an automated process that leads to them wanting to be paid, or I never get anywhere. Please help
thanks

Hello TeknoRapture,
I sincerely apologize for all the inconvenience that you have had to go through all this while. I understand that the services provided to you have not been anyway closer to world-class but we promise that we will surely resolve your issue.
The agent might have suggested U-verse upgrade because I assume your lines might not be provisioned for that kind of DSL speed. The DSL signal strength also depends on the distance between your premises and the Central Office. The bandwidth quota does not limit your internet browsing. It is just that AT&T follows the fair-usage policy wherein your speed is dropped one level after you have utilized your bandwidth quota.
I request you to please call us on 877-722-3755 and speak with a Technical Help Desk agent. They will be running some line tests and will determine where exactly the problem lies.

if your Internet connection is coming and going, it could be intermittent connection issue, DSL is very sensitive to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). It is important to make sure that the DSL modem and telephone lines are placed in such a way as to minimize this interference, as well as placing them to provide adequate cooling. The following are a few of the possible causes of Electromagnetic Interference on a DSL line:
-
- Cordless phones and other electronic devices are the most common cause of intermittent Internet connectivity issues. Cordless phone systems running at 2.4 GHz often run at the same frequency as your DSL modem or home networking router. If you are experiencing intermittent connectivity issues, you may need to replace your cordless phone with one that runs at a different frequency.
- Large metal objects and electrical equipment such as televisions, home entertainment electronics, and microwaves can also cause interference. Try to keep your DSL modem and wireless home networking router away from these sources of electronic interference.
- Check with your neighbor. You may both be running wireless networks at the same frequency. The solution may be as easy as changing the channel of your wireless router.
- Physical obstructions such as walls, floors, home entertainment electronics, appliances and furniture can cause interference if the wireless signals have to pass through them. Move your DSL modem or wireless home networking router to another location so it isn't in the line-of-sight of these potential interference factors. Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- Your phone jack may be defective or damaged. Try connecting the modem to a different phone jack, if possible. If the hiss and background noise is gone, the initial phone jack is defective and should be replaced.Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- The RJ-11 phone cord that connects your modem to the phone jack may be damaged and need replacing. If your phone cord is over 14 feet long, the signal may be weakened sufficiently that it is intermittently lost.Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- DSL filters are needed on all phone devices except the DSL modem. If you have more than one phone line entering your home, DSL filters should also be installed on the second line, even if it is not connected to your DSL equipment.
- Phone ringing disconnects DSL service If your DSL service is disconnecting when your phone rings, you probably have a phone somewhere in the house/office that doesn't have a DSL filter installed between the phone and the wall jack. Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- The inside phone wiring in your home may also cause intermittent loss of the DSL signal. Shorts, grounds, poor line quality, etc. can degrade the DSL signal.
If the issue persist, it is recommended that you contact the AT&T voice technical helpdesk at 1-877-722-3755 (open 24/7) and troubleshoot according to their recommendation, if require they will run a line test on your AT&T DSL line and help you accordingly.

Penny, dear. I do not have wireless. I am 'wired'. Also, I was already told by a CS rep that in order to use the online bill pay service, I had to have more than just dsl service from ATT.
Since my phone needs to be plugged into my Vonage device, which needs to be plugged into my ATT-issued modem, where do you suggest I move it to?

I had the same problem for weeks and expensive help. I moved the Linksys all over and the modem. Pick up both and see how hot they are. If hot to handle get something to raise both half inch or more. Nothing flat try four bolts. It has worked for me for the last month. invader

Whew. I just found this forum and at least relieved that I'm not the only one. My ATT DSL-elite service was fine for about 10 months but since February 2010 I've been having the same intermittent problem. 4 service reps and 100 phone calls later, still having the same problem.
They gave me a new modem, checked wires inside (attic crawl space), outside, down the hill. No avail, still get kicked off several times a day and download speeds, esp. in the evening are downright like dial-up.
I've unplugged all my phones except an old dial phone on the other side of the house - that has a filter, there is no TV or anything in the office where the new ATT modem/router is.
It's getting worse and worse. ATT doesn't think it's them, but guess what.. I think it's them. I feel hijacked. Each rep has a different 'solution' but none have worked so far.
I'll keep scrolling this forum for ideas, but in the meantime will research Comcast.

Yes I already have.
Another technician is on his way over today. He told me on the phone that he thinks it's either a substation issue or a central office issue, not a wiring issue. I will take that to heart next time I call in. I do feel like ATT is dropping the ball big time on this, if this many people have found the online forum, who knows how many customers have this problem and don't know what to do about it.
While I appreciate ATT monitoring the forum, what I'd really like is a solution - with consistent connection and proper speed.

The tech worked on my issue today. He didn't actually come to the house but called in several times and replaced a card and wires at the neighborhood ATT box.. about 1/2 mile away.
Since then (about 2:30 pm pst), I've had one more outtage. I'll monitor it this evening for the intermittent issue and speed.
I really don't want to call and lose another hour of my life on the phone, so after this, it's comcast or something else.

I have been having the same issues over the past few weeks since upgrading to the elite package.
My connection will drop multiple times per day. I hadn't had any problems for years up prior to this upgrade. I have already wasted two phone calls to tech support so they could check the line to tell me everything was fine. Of course it was fine it wasn't during the 10 seconds where the line drops and kills my work connection.
I am glad I found this thread to realize that it wasn't just me.
The DSL solution is on its last legs. The cable modem is looking better by the second. I can't belive it has come to this.

The fourth ATT person worked on my line from the neighborhood box. He said he replaced a card and some wires. Nothing has changed, in fact the service is now slower than before (like dial-up speed). The intermittent problem continues.
I would like to mention also that when I placed the service call last week, the woman I spoke with seemed to think I needed to downgrade my service and that elite might be slowing down at the house (not making it in?) or something like that.
I'm sorry to say ATT, after many many years (as a pac bell customer) and now as an ATT customer that I will call Comcast tomorrow for an estimate.

I think I may have the solution to your problem as I have experienced it myself. My internet connection seems fine one minute, then when I logon to my online game (World of Warcraft) (this by the way could be any intensive downloading/uploading connection, not just a game); my 2wire gateway internet light flashes red and I am bumped out of my game. This is EXTREMELY frustrating--I have gone so far as to spend days reloading my game and other related addons, only to find that the problem persists even through this. Here was my solution: I use a laptop computer to play my game, and connect WIRELESSLY. After numerous calls all over the place to determine my problem, one AT&T tech slipped that if you connect wirelessly, however have no WIRED computer connected to the gateway, the connection will fail on any intensive activity. This is due to a wire check that randomly runs to be sure that you are uding your connection through your registered home phone line (ya, GRRRRRRRR...). Indeed, when I boot up my old computer, and make sure it is "hardwired" to the gateway, all my internet connections seem to be resolved. AT&T if you're listening...we need to come into the 21st century--PEOPLE HAVE WIRELESS DEVICES and we want to connect with them--as your commercials promise--we don't want to have to maintain some old wired system as your "security measures" force us to do. Like the others, I'm looking into the possibility of switching to cable service (and guess what, if that happens--bye bye phone line too...). AT&T customer for 20 plus years...

I am having the same issues with my warcraft gaming as well. I will be in the middle of something and the game freezes and disconnects. When I look over at my 2wire modum, the dsl light is flashing red and then after a few seconds it goes back green and the internet light comes back on. This is not only annoying, it flat out makes me mad because it is happening SEVERAL times a night. I have never had problems like this with my att service until the last few weeks. Each time I call "tech support" I get some person from a country far far away and cannot understand the english I am speaking, and I dont speak Pakistani or whatever they are using. -[Keep it relevant] If I cant get these issues resolved soon I dont know what im going to do. I really dont want the inconvenience of getting charter cable to come out in a few weeks and install their stuff, but I will if im pushed into it.

Hello SgtMac,
Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience that you might have experienced.
* Cordless phones and other electronic devices are the most common cause of intermittent Internet connectivity issues. Cordless phone systems running at 2.4 GHz often run at the same frequency as your DSL modem or home networking router. If you are experiencing intermittent connectivity issues, you may need to replace your cordless phone with one that runs at a different frequency.
* Physical obstructions such as walls, floors, home entertainment electronics, appliances and furniture can cause interference if the wireless signals have to pass through them. Move your DSL modem or wireless home networking router to another location so it isn't in the line-of-sight of these potential interference factors. Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
* The RJ-11 phone cord that connects your modem to the phone jack may be damaged and need replacing. If your phone cord is over 14 feet long, the signal may be weakened sufficiently that it is intermittently lost.Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
* DSL filters are needed on all phone devices except the DSL modem. If you have more than one phone line entering your home, DSL filters should also be installed on the second line, even if it is not connected to your DSL equipment.
* The inside phone wiring in your home may also cause intermittent loss of the DSL signal. Shorts, grounds, poor line quality, etc. can degrade the DSL signal.
After trying all the steps mentioned above, if the intermittent connection issue persist, please contact AT&T voice technical help desk at 1-877-722-3755 (open 24/7), they will perform a line test on your AT&T DSL line and if require they will send an engineer to check the satus.
