Modem goes off-line on its own

I had an ATT modem for a few years. When it came time to replace the modem , I replaced it with a motorola and from that time on I have had to unplug and plug the modem in order to get on the internet. The modem just disconects, with no resetting. I have called in a number of times and have been told how to reset the modem on every call, have been told that I may have gotten a few bad modems, have been told to not use a filter on the modem and have been told that it is an electrical problem with the plug or power strip. I went and bought another surge protector just for the modem and put it in a different outlet. No help, about 2 hrs later, no internet, unplug and plug back in and back on line again. This has gone on now for a little over a month now. Today I returned and purchased the 6th Motorola (the exact ones sold by ATT) and will not return this one, the odds of them all being bad are astronomical. I have not yet been disconnected while online. If anyone can tell me how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.
