I need to move our main computer from one floor to another. Currently, the router is hard wired to a telephone line. Does it always have to be hard wired or is there a wireless router? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

what is your router?
the modem/router always needs to be hardwired via a phone/data cable to the phonejack. that's where your modem/router gets the DSL signal to connect to the internet. if you want, you could setup the computer to connect wirelessly with the router instead. you need to have a wireless adapter that will receive the wireless signal from your router.
