Router is dropping signal

I have a problem with my Internet service.  I have tried different routers, several home visits from "technicians" and many phone calls with AT&T DSL tech support. Nothing has worked.  I am currently using a Netgear 7550 gateway. When working properly, my down speed is 7040 Kbps and up speed is 512 Kbps.  The problem is that every hour or so, red lights will start flashing on the router and it will stop working for about a minute. Every time this happens, the speed will drop. If left alone, this will continue until the down speed is around 1000 Kbps.    Sometimes, restating the router will fix my speeds and get them back to where they should be, but the "hiccups" always come back within an hour.  Most of the time, restating does nothing to help. I have tried several configurations of wires, locations, and outlets. I have found that unplugging the router from everything and taking to a different phone jack and outlet at the other side of the house seems to "reset" the router and get the speeds back to where the should be.  If I take the router back to its original place and hook everything back up, the speed is initially fine. But the speed begins to deteriorate soon after when the "hiccups" begin again.  Based on this, it makes me think that the problem has something to do with my router settings. I know how to login to the router and adjust the settings, but I have no idea what settings need to be changed.   Or could this be an AT&T problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have the techs run a dedicated line for your modem or if your handy you can do it yourself. It needs to be run from the NID (grey box on outside of house) to the room where you want the modem located. You'll want to make sure to keep it a few feet away from any electrical lines if possible.

I am not sure about the nid test, but I have been keeping any eye on the log information on the router. I have no idea what these mean, so it could just be a coincidence. Any thoughts?
