I am still using the original modem that I got from SBC when we started a DSL service. We are currently using the DSL Direct Pro package (3 Mbps). With new technologies and the advance from 802.11g to 802.11n I was wondering if a newer modem would provide any speed or security enhancements. Or is the modem independent of the DSL line rate. Or is it better to go the the 6 Mbps DSL Direct Elite package?

Using the same modem on 6 Mbps. No problems.
How has your service been, do you consistantly get at least 2.4 Mbps when you do a speed test ( http://www.speedtest.net/ )? If you have subpar service already, then going to the 6 Mbps plan may compound any problems.
802.11g/n really has nothing to do with your internet speed. They just pertain to the speed/capabilities of your local (in your home) wireless network, and both are at least 4 times faster than 6 Mbps DSL service. The 5100 is a single port modem/router and has no wireless capabilities. If you want to upgrade your modem/router to something with the latest wireless technology you can either order the Pace 4111N from AT&T or you can buy a wireless router either online or in a store. I use a D-Link DIR 655 connected to my Speedstream 5100.

Thanks for the response. You have answered my questions and I currently have wire/wireless router and get around 2.4Mbps with the speed test. So I guess I am good to go. Thanks again.
