My mom just bought an amazon kindle & it only works on a wifi signal, so we have to change our network.
right now our network is wired, with one 2004 dell pc desktop (windows xp home service pack 2) in the kitchen with a speedstream 5100b router, that we got when we 1st signed up for at&t. the desktop is set to suto obtiain IP's. The desktop also has connected, via usb, a printer with fax functions. I have the speedstream connected to an ethernet switch, & from the switch I have cat5e ethernet cable running from the switch to a 2010 macbook pro (snowleopard 10.6.8) laptop in another room. The laptop is set with a static IP address.
how do I set up the new at&t 2wire? i would like to keep the desktop & laptop on a wired network, & use wirelss for devices like the kindle & iphone. We are already exisisting at&t customers.we also have some filters (that came with the speedstream) installed on some of the phones in our home. although, I think mother took off a filter off one of the phones as the line was getting static.
Also, i am apprehensive about disrupting my wired network, as i am reading alot of bad things about the 2wire, i need stable 24/7 internet acess, as I am taking online classes from my laptop in the other room.
I am in an older home; 1950's era, with older wiring so I have a question about power for the 2wire;
i read that the 2wire power supply needs to be plugged into a wall outlet. does it have to be? or can i plug it into a surge protector along with the dell desktop & monitor, & printer/speakers.
if i have to use it's own plug, or wall outlet, can i use it with an extension cord or it's own power strip, as the cord it came with is not long enough to reach one of the few outlets in our kitchen.
also, the desktop has avast antivirus running on it, do I have to disable all my internet securty before I set it up?
