Can someone explain to me why AT&T charges a extra $20.00 for tethering another device when I already have a data plan. Am I not already paying for this. This just sounds like they are wanting to double you for something you are already paying for.Can someone explain this to me.
Thank you,
BruceE

Bruce,
Couldn't agree with you more. I have an iPhone 4S with a so-called unlimited data plan. If I tether, say, an iPad to my iPhone, I have to pay $50/month for the privilege? Why? The data being used by my iPad is coming through my iPhone, for which I'm already paying almost $100/month. Plus, if I use 3GB of data, AT&T is going to throttle down my access speeds to near-unusable rates.
No thanks, AT&T.
Jim

I also agree. Verizon doesn't do this. I just bought the new IPAD and ATT was supposed to have tethering but doesn't Yet, Verizon does. I hope ATT becomes more responsive to it's customers' needs while, of course, controlling their bottom line

Has anything changed since this posting 3 months ago??? I am looking at the Blackberry Playbook and Blackberry Torch 9860 when my contract runs out. I have the $15 wireless data plan on my present Blackberry Bold 9700. I'm trying to figure out if it would be cheaper for me to get a Playbook and tether it to my cell phone instead of having a DSL landline. Any thoughts on how that would work??? Anyone have experience with it???
PS - I get discount under a corporate account for my own personal AT&T cell service. Does that apply to tethering, too???

If you want to tether your phone, the 50.00 5GB plan is required, it is the only place that both allows tethering and is eligible for a fan discount, the other current data plans are not eligible for a fan discount per att's terms of service. Unless you utilze very little internet (less then 5GB a month) access replacing a normal form of broadband with a cellular form is not advisable.
Add - per this article, unless something is change, ATT blocks bridging on the playbook
