I use an AT&T mobile broadband modem on my laptop. It insists on putting a pop-up again and again and again that says "signal strength is low." I can't get rid of it. It can't be moved and it lays over anything I have open.
Please help if you can. This may be the wrong forum for this question, but my question on the "General Care and Support" forum has gone unanswered.
I've asked the local AT&T store people for help, so far to no avail. I've reinstalled the AT&T Communication Manager software in hopes there would be a "disable" option for the pop-up, but not so.
Luckily I've just signed up for this plan, so I still have time to cancel it if this problem isn't resolved.
Thank you for any help.

There should be some kind of configuration for the software to control alerting (pop-ups).
What operating system are you running on your laptop?
It's quite possible that your computer can use the modem natively (built-in drivers) without having to use AT&T's software at all.
Try uninstalling all the AT&T software and drivers, then reinstall the modem using the built-in hardware drivers and "internet connection wizard" for your operating system.

COMPUTER JOE:
It sounds like a great idea for me to delete the AT&T software and drivers and just let Vista's built-in drivers install the modem. But without the AT&T software there would be no software for monitoring my internet use -- and monitoring my usage is what AT&T has to do to know how much to charge me each month. (AT&T allows you 5g downloads per month for $50; after that it's $10 per g.)
And actually, AT&T has set up its modem so that when it is connected via USB the first time, it immediately and automatically finds the drivers and loads the software -- there is no opportunity to select another method of connecting.
There may be some software configuration for controlling pop-ups, but it seems unavailable to the user. I have gone thru all the preference and other options that are available on the screens that are produced by the modem software.
Thank you so much for your reply, Computer Joe. Any further advice will be greatly appreciated.

There are other programs for monitoring bandwidth usage, if that's the only reason for keeping it.
You might check task manager and see if the alerter is a process you can kill.
You could check the service manager to see if it's a service you can disable.

It's a shame we can't get an official response on this issue. I don't feel comfortable telling family members who aren't extremely tech savvy that the only solution would be to remove all of AT&T's software and configure their network settings manually. I feel I barely understand enough to try that on my own, I don't see my grandparents being able to pull that one off. Plus I don't think AT&T would want people not using their software with their devices.
The constant pop-ups are confusing to those who aren't power users, people for whom the AT&T software is otherwise excellent. I'd like to have a better answer to give than "You always have low signal strength at your house and always have, you can't actually move the device, your computer, or anything else to make the pop-ups stop, just close the window when it comes up every 2 minutes and ignore it."

Dear Mercurius and others:
My eventual solution to this highly annoying problem was to download another piece of software for connecting the AT&T modem to the internet and to monitor my usage. I went to the Sierra Wireless website (the maker of the AT&T modem) and downloaded their AirCard Watcher (the one that is indicated for use with AT&T). Then I plugged in the AT&T USB modem. I don't recall exactly how I proceeded from there, except that I was able to ignore/decline the software that the AT&T modem wanted to install, and instead let the AirCard Watcher find the modem. It worked fine, and now no *#((+!!**** popups!

AT&T is true to form by not even acknowledging the problem here. This is the kind of forum that is right up their alley. You, as customers figure it out, don't bother us, just keep your credit card linked. I am stuck with this service for my laptop but am canning all my personal and home accounts.
