My wife has a Samsung Infuse.
Just recently we've been alerted to massive data usage.
For example it says yesterday that her phone sent almost 40 Mb.
She's a light facebook and gmail user. And hardly uses it outside our home wifi.
We're fairly new to this. Is there maybe some fundamental settings we should check?

I was told by one ATT rep that it's "internet usage" ,but that's not true, because I had 1.6 GIGS of data SENT at 12:34 AM-- while I was asleep. I also had a small bit of data sent at the SAME TIME two nights afterwards:
Date Time To/From Type Direction Msg/Kb/Min
| 06/07 | 12:54 PM | phone | Internet/MEdia Net | Sent | 40KB |
| 06/07 | 12:35 AM | phone | Internet/MEdia Net | Sent | 2KB |
| 06/06 | 12:36 AM | phone | Internet/MEdia Net | Sent | 1642565KB |
| Total this page | 1642607KB | ||||
| TOTAL | 1642607KB |
My billing date starts on the 7th, and it is the 8th and I have "used" 1600mb of data in only 1 day when in the last 3 months I've only used 950mb. They are telling me this is going to drop off because there is a lag in data showing up or disappearing. I'm givng them until the 14th the LATEST-- if that doesn't drop off, I'm disputing it, because I have done NOTHING DIFFERENT that would cause my phone to send 1.6 gigs of data at 12:35 in the morning. My AVERAGE monthly data usage is about 300mb. w/ over 100 apps and at least 10 running in the background including a gps app (find friends) I use full wifi at home and at work. This is all {word filter evasion} and I'm I doubt VERY MUCH this is going to "drop off" my bill and I'm going to contact everyone I can contact about this (including the FCC if I have to)
Please see my post below on this as well:
ps---I am SLEEPING at 12:30 am, as I am a single parent and I WORK! LOL

There is definitely a problem. My 10-year-old son has an iPhone 3gs. On May 29th, I received an email stating based upon his usage, I might want to increase my plan. Since he's never gone over much, if at all, about 40mb of usage on the 200mb plan, I honestly thought nothing of it, that it was just a sales ploy by At&t to get me to increase my bill. Sure enough, at the end of the month, June 19th, he'd used a total of 34mb. No overage charges.
On Saturday, June 23rd, my son received a text from At&t that he reached 75% of data overage allowance (not to be confused with allowable already-billed 200mb) on his data plan. They did include a tip that Mobile Data is unlimited over Wifi. Um, no kidding. Not only was he over 200mb, but he was at 1600mb. As of today, 2 days later, his usage shows almost 1800mb. The day the largest data was sent, not received, was Friday morning at 7:41 a.m. as 1601941KB....2 days, which is almost 1600mb, into a brand new billing cycle, and this is before he was awake, at home, and we have wi-fi. We were at home the night before as well...so, again, no way to have incurred a "sent" data amount such as this off of wi-fi.
So let's look at what uses up our data, remembering that he's 10 years old and I'm the overprotective parent who tracks everything he does on his phone...Facebook? No. Twitter? No. Post pictures? No. Surf the internet? No. Email? No. Have pictures sent to him? No.
So where, oh where, could this 1800mb total of data that was sent, not received, but sent, have come from?
At&t needs to get on top of this issue ASAP. I will take this to the FCC, and everyone else I can possibly think of, if it doesn't "drop" off my bill in the same way it suspiciously appeared to have dropped in on my bill.
And no, the At&t rep was terrible, kept saying I must have left an app running when I left the freeness of wi-fi. Well, that just didn't happen. In a year of having this iPhone, it's never happened, and it didn't happen this time either.

How about
listen to music via pandora or one of the other myriad of instant music apps that are available on itunes
watch video on hulu or youtube
play games on the iphone - some send data back and forth
what might helpis if you make a list of all the apps that are not default on the iphone or you can hard reset the phone back to factiry defaults and watch the data usage during the period

Wow!! Thanks for your post!! I too, am officially disputing this at the end of my billing cycle. Of course, I won't go over my data usage since I pay for 3Gb's but I"m still disputing it. I spent 2-1/2 hours on the phone w/ ATT and various reps, and various departments. They even had the you-know-whats to tell me it's my phone and they transferred me to Apple!! They guy at Apple and I had a good laugh and he transferred me back to ATT.
Just and FYI-- data, especially roaming, CAN be delayed up to 30 days, so it doesn't have to be used the night or even day before. Try to think back to anywhere you went in the past month and if data could have been used. I, myself, didn't go anywhere or do anything different that would cause that much data. I don't even think I could use that much data if I TRIED. Even watching a You Tube video on 3G uses only 15mb of data.
And of course, I've only used 173 mb of data in 18 days which brings my total data usage for 4 months to 1123mb (1.1gb) just under 300mb/month.
There is an app called My Data Manager. Download that for your son's phone, it does not have to be running in the task bar to work. It tracs Wifi, Mobile, Roaming usage. It tracks by month, week, day and even hour. It tracks how much data was used WHERE. It also tracks usage by APP. It's awesome. I plan on making a darn spreadsheet to send to ATT just to show them I would NEVER EVER use 1.6gb of data.
Good luck with your quest. Hopefully you'll update here or maybe you can message me after you make a formal complaint , I'd like to see what they say. I will do the same.

That MAY cause the problem, but I had the same problem and I have NEVER streamed music , hulu or Youtube on 3G. I HAVE watched 1 or 2 videos on YT on 3G and one 3-4 minutes video uses about 15mb of data. If it were all youtube, that's 106 videos, lol.
the OP and I are NOT the only people this has happened to, I can guarantee it.

dont make hard comments on data sizes for videos, video size varies due to numerous variables based on the inherent format of the video files, have seen 100 MB on a single video with everything maxed when the video was created.
another simple fact, the repsonse was giving other possiblities from what the op mentioned, found it surprising that a lot of casual users do not understand that streaming audio and video actually consumes data, had a employee that complained about excessive data on her smartphone - turns out she constantly streamed pandora when she was in the car on her 2 hour commute 6 days a week plus during the day at work (we don;t allow employees to connect BYOD items to our wifi becasue of security) - she never realized that streaming music was utilizing data.
