No Texting plan can I make sure I get no texts

I do not have a texting plan because I don't need it since I can just send email messages to the people I text through gmail. The thing being is that I don't want people to be able to send me text messages at all.... is it possible to do such a thing ? I mean don't want a .20 charge if someone texts me

Yes, you can block texting all together. Just call Customer Care, 611 from your cell phone, and ask them to block texting. This will also block MMS and IMing with the preinstaleld clients on your phone, but it will stop any additional charges.

Actually it wouldn't block MMS. SMS and MMS are two entirely separate items. If anyone tells you otherwise, you can call b.s. on them. Since the OP stated they use gmail to send and receive (which requires the Internet usage) they can have the texting alone blocked. It'd work in the reverse fashion the iPhone currently does. (iPhones automatically have MMS removed; SMS and Internet are enabled though).

hkellogg..as Owtlaw1 has stated...if you block text messages through ATT, you will ALSO be blocking your ability to send/receive MMS AND IM as well.

You CAN block MMS, which would be a data block, and still have Texting, but it does not work the other way around, as you would want it. Text and MMS work together.

Well I called 611 and it just told me to come online and block it and i cant find the way to do that and thats why i called them they just keep telling me to come online annd do it

There is no way to block messaging online. Customer service has to add it to your line.

thanks for all the responses, I got it taken care of and now using my google voice number for text messages since people can text that number and its forwarded to my email immediately and I can reply via email and its sent to their number via text

No text at all? Absolutely. I ordered it when they hiked the per-use pricing above what I agreed to many months ago. Works pretty well.

Here is the wording you want to see in your "features" after it is done:

* Text Message - Opt Out

* MMS Opt-Out

No text comes in or goes out. The only exception I have seen is when I tried AT&T IM client. That pile of garbage uses data (I am on unlimited data plan), goes thru Oz, and comes back and bills every little IM as "Text/SMS" even with text blocked. Simple enough to not use it; eBuddy is superior anyway. I do plenty of traffic with S/E email tool and some with gmail java applet. Never a "text" though. No MMS either; S/E mail tool handles that task no problem.

I like the idea of using google voice for people who have no idea how to send to mail from a phone.
