Hello,
I work in an IT environment and we very often need to send txt message alerts for our servers. Until recently, I was able to send messages from our alerting server (Nagios) to number@sms.att.net with no issues, the message came through perfectly and from the same address (email address) each time.
Recently, these messages are simply not getting through. I can send a normal message to my number@sms.att.net address from say gmail or hotmail and it works fine, but we cannot get the messages from this server to go through. The odd thing is that the server is still able to send to number@txt.att.net with no issues, but this is not preferred as all texts come from a new random phone number and it is not easy to manage them.
Does anyone know if there are requirements for the SMS packet when sending to the number@sms.att.net number, over the txt.att.net number?
Thanks

netlatch,
No, this is still an issue for us.I am stuck using the txt address and having piles of texts from random numbers....quite annoying.
I was thinking of opening a ticket with AT&T, but am not even sure where to do that?

My Chat with AT&T support about this issue....not good:
Please wait for a chat representative to respond.
Welcome to AT&T Chat. My name is 'Ben' and I’ll be happy to assist you today.
Ben: Hello Mr. ! I apologize you are experiencing this issue today. I will be more than glad to assist you with your messaging issues.
Andrew: Recently, these messages are simply not getting through.
Andrew: THanks Ben
Andrew: I am trying to find out why these messages are not making it to my phone
Ben: The current way to send a message is number@txt.att.net. This may be why you are having the issues sending the messages in the other format.
Andrew: is sms.att.net not supported any longer?
Ben: It is possible that it isn't because we had made some changes to our sms systems a year or so ago. It appears that it is still only working with certain email providers. I believe this is the same issue that you are having. We all change to number@mms.att.net because of this.
Ben: That is for picture messages though.
Andrew: so, you are saying that only certain email providers can send to mms.att.net?
Ben: Yes, only certain email providers are able to use this format. Eventually, this will be completely turned down. I am actually surprised that it is still working. You are the first person in over a year that I have spoken to that is still using this format.
Ben: We were told it was discontinued.
Andrew: ok, this is quite disconcerting, because when messages are sent to txt.att.net, the sending number is a different number each time
Andrew: is there any way to avoid that?
Ben: That is because it is routed via a different routing number each time. We use LRN or local routing numbers to send these email to sms messages and that is why a new number shows up. All of these are AT&T numbers and non-functioning other than for these purposes.
Andrew: ok, so there is no way to avoid this? when previously using the sms number, it showed the email address as the sender, which was great, do these use different technologies?
Andrew: it would seem that functionality is now worse, would it not?
Ben: Well, it depends on the way you look at it. The change I believe was to hide the email address for privacy reasons. Also, we were having issues with customer trying to respond to these messages when using the prior format to send email to text. Since changing to the new format, we have had less issues with sending and receiving, but now a random number shows instead of the email address.
Andrew: ok, thank you, is there anyway for me to voice an opinion to have this reinstated? like a feature request?
Ben: The best way to get your opinion heard on this matter would be to call in to regular Customer Service and then ask to speak with Tier 2 Technical support. They will be able to pass it on to a higher technical department and have them look at this. The issues you are having may help them fix this service.
Andrew: thank you...I appreciate the explanation

Not sure if you figured things out or not, but I had both of these issues. First, by sending to mms.att.net instead of txt.att.net, you are removing the 160 character limit, and messages will show from the sending email address, not a random number.
Next: If you messages are being blocked by the AT&T servers, check your settings here: http://mymessages.wireless.att.com It took 3 days of talking to AT&T before a rep finally found this link. He literally told me he had no idea what it meant, but he suggested I check it out. There you can configure alias addresses and block messages sent to your txt and/or mms adresses.
Hope it helps!
