I know I get texts from facebook mobile, and they come as 8 digit numbers.

texting services have a different code length than phone numbers. it could be facebook or myspace.. or twitter. or cha cha.. or many other sites

It could be an IM client. MSN generally produces an 8 digit code if you receive an IM as a text from someone on Windows Live. Different IM clients may have different lengths though. Here's the real kicker, you can also initiate the IM/Text conversation if you text the 8 (or however many) digit number. It still only counts as text an not IM that way.
