"connection failed due to incorrect apn setting" message in Mobile Net

I spent more than an hour with an ATT helpdesk person, going through reset twice, power-on/off, giving out the IMEI, and SIM number. However, I cannot access the internet when WiFi is OFF. I see the message "connection failed due to incorrect apn setting" when I select the Mobile Net. The ATT helpdesk person does not seem to know anything about this.

When I went through the help for this problem online, I see that the only thing out there is data plan may have been added for 3G and not 4G. However, ATT helpdesk keeps insisting that they have it set correctly.

Any help from anyone would be much appreciated.

I Have the same error on my brand new Inspire 4G and spent an hour at the ATT help desk.

LOL, your post makes me laugh.. sorry, not at you, but at the content of your post. First off, AT&T can set the IMEI number to all zeros and your phone should still work in every way, shape, and form. The IMEI number does nothing more than identify what handset you're using on their network. Secondly, There's no difference between 3G and 4G. "4G" is what the carriers are calling it, even though it's not true 4G, but what it is is essentially a "software upgrade" to the same exact 3G hardware they already have installed, and, if you ask me, it's not so much a software upgrade as it's more likely an uncapping or de-throttling of the hardware. In other words, the 3G equipment was installed with caps in place to inhibit full speed until the 'software upgrade' came along to uncap it. That way, they can sell you on 3G, then sell it to you again as 4G. True 4G is something else, which, if interested, go read what the true definition of 4G is. The point here is to get your phone (and mdjeffries') phone up and running.

An incorrect APN setting is referring to your phone. I'm guessing you have an HTC Inspire from your username, so I'll assume you at the very least have an android phone. If so, from the home screen hit menu>>settings>>wireless & networks>>APN and select the APN that's highlighted and edit it.

MNC:410 (note. this could also be 310, 41 or 15)
APN Type: leave blank

Make sure those settings are there and give it a try (with wifi off to ensure you're connecting thru the cell network and not a wifi connection).

actually without the proper imei it probably wont add the 4g plan needed for data access

Thanks I used the settings you gave and it says connected but when i tried surfin in the internet... it won't work,, it says that the webpage is temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address... please help... i used an unlocked HTC inspire.. and my sim is a Gophone,,,

Why would you use a go phone sim, to bypass the $30 data plan? AT&T is going to pick you up for pay as you go data usage, then you will have a higher bill.

I am trying these entries on my Infuse 4G but I still have no mobile network...can you suggest something else by any chance please?

PS - when I go back and look at the access point names nothing is listed there, not even the one I just added that you posted.

PSS - If the MNC isnt the right number, would that be a reason that the access point is listing?

are you saving the entry after you in put it then reboot the phone again?. as for the MNC, as long as it is one of the ones listed above it should be fine.

Ugh, this happened to my phone too after a software automatic upgrade. I finally found the APN settings under settings->Mobile data->Access Point Names-> then press 'Menu' in the upper right corner -> then press 'New APN'-> then enter all the settings below->then you must save it all by pressing 'Menu' in the upper right corner and selecting 'SAVE'. What a pain in the butt.
