How does at&t microsim works?

Hi all, this summer I'm going to California for a trip of 1 month (from Italy), and i would like to buy there an Ipad 4G with at&t microsim, to stay connected all over my trip.
How does it works? What i've to do to complete the transaction? Is there the possibility to have a sort of pre-paid sim or credit card's connected one?

Here is a link to Apple's instructions for adding a data plan. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4157?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You can stop and start a data plan as you please so you are not committing to a long term contract with ATT.
