Why not possible to access Gmail through IMAP?

How come Xpress Mail makes me access Gmail through POP when it's clearly IMAP enabled (there is an option to enable IMAP in the Gmail settings)?

Can't you configure a new "other" email account, specifying Gmail's IMAP server?  And does it really matter if it's POP3 or IMAP?  If you specify in Gmail's settings online to "Leave mail on server", this will make Gmail behave similar to an IMAP account, despite it being POP3..  (I don't normally use the consumer edition of Xpressmail, just the personal edition with the desktop connector.)

Well it leaves the emails on the server but it doesn't mark them as read, so when I access Gmail from my desktop there's a bunch of 'unread' emails that I read on my phone that day. It's just annoying really. It seems so pointless because you can use Gmail with IMAP but Xpress mail is so behind the times. And incredibly, you can only set up one personal email account with Xpress (despite this being the year 2009!). It really is about time AT&T updated themselves to modern times. Most people have more than one email account that they'd like to have pushed to their phones.

Oh and I forgot to add that, when you first install Xpress mail and register an account and set it to, say, keep the last 25 emails on your phone, it downloads these from the server and shows them as 'unread,' even when you have already read these on your desktop. Because Windows Mobile does not give you the option to select more than one email at once (again, this is 2009....???) you either have to 'read' each of those 25 emails one by one, or put up with the fact that your Today screen will say "25 unread emails" for a while.

IMHO- I would never want to use Xpress Mail. I have two gmail accounts setup as IMAP4, plus three other IMAP4 accounts also. My sixth account (hotmail) is set up under Windows Live. As someone else mentioned, how they are set up depends upon your preference, and how you want them to sync with your desktop accounts.

Xpress mail is crappy and they should fix the problem.  Mine express mail stopped working and it was frustrating.  I just got tech support to help me set up my email using POP.  By the way, my POP was set up to read my sbcglobal.net email.  Can I also set it up to retrieve AOL email?  If so, how do I do that thru POP and what do I enter into the incoming and outgoing mail server when setting up?
