AT&T:
This is getting RIDICULOUS. My dad has been experiencing this downtime with the internet service at his house between 7:30 p.m. PDT and about 11:00 PDT.
We called AT&T 6 weeks ago, and were told that someone would look into it. We VERY CLEARLY told the lady that sending a technician during normal daytime hours would be useless, since he wouldn't find any problems. She said she'd note that down. Well, guess what : the technician shows up around 4:30pm a few days later, finds no problem, talks to us like we're dolts and making up things, and leaves.
After repeated calls (and going through all the maze of menu options the support cowards at AT&T hide behind), we got through to someone who gave us the name of an Art {Personal content removed for safety}. We left a message for that person because we were told that he was out of the office until 10/3/11. Well, 10/3 comes along, and nobody calls (surprise, surprise). I called Art and he tells me that he deals with Redwood City, CA and points north, up to South San Francisco. Duh, why didn't someone figure this out before??? Since we are in Palo Alto, I was told that he couldn't help us, and he conveniently foists the probelm to another person (a Blaine {Personal content removed for safety}) who supposedly supports the Mountain View and Palo Alto areas. I left a message for him yesterday morning, and of course, as expected, I have had no response or call back.
It's sad because this is my dad's internet connection, and this is his only window to the outside world. He is desperately trying to reach someone at AT&T with a clue, but the sheer indifference of all the people we've dealt with AT&T is just so exasperating.
I am going to suggest that he just cancel AT&T and move to Comcast.
Point to note: I too had crappy AT&T internet service. After repeated calls, I gave up and moved to Comcast a few months ago. Only when I called to cancel did someone try to persuade me from leaving. Pathetic, to say the least. But I am a very happy camper now.

My modem doesnt cut out any more but why am i getting 70 ping after i tried to resolve modem pblm??? i get between 58-79 ping this is bullonie. any ideas?? is this throttling? thanks for responses. this is just like clearwire. it is not going to work out at this rate.

AT&T DSL speed is really slow since the end of the school year, for obvious reasons. However, that is not an excuse for having to pay for a specific level of service and receiving far less. In my area the AT&T excuse is "sorry, we can't do anything about it." We have had difficulty with AT&T DSL service since 2003. Their excuse is that their equipment is at "overfull" capacity. However, they offer no solution. My neighbors and I are currently building a case to take to our Georgia Public Service Commission regarding this issue. We do not have AT&T Universe service because the housing density in my area is not great enough, though we are surrounded by it. In 2006 we were told by AT&T that they were aware of the overloaded conditions in our area but that there were no plans to correct it. Yet, the DSL bill still comes each month. Guess what happens when I don't pay the bill?
I suggest that complaining to the BBB is not going to get results. Only by "formally", as in writing a letter, to your Public Service Commission, do you have a chance to get the problem rectified..

I received a letter from AT&T stating that a survey had been effected and that it had been noted that my DSL was no longer running full speed, and because of it, I was to pay less on my phone bill. I had noticed a slowdown on my PC and thought I had gotten invaded by all kinds of viruses, so tweeked my PC left and right when it was them all along. "THAT IS JUST NOT RIGHT!"
In order to push their new "U-VERSE" system they purposely cut down the speed of the DSL in order for people to switch to their new and more expensive system. That is a form of blackmail and should not be allowed by the FCC to which I am going to file a formal complaint.
Based on the reviews of many people, they are not happy with the U-VERSE system, but they are now stuck because they have signed a contract.
The business practices of AT&T are getting more and more underhanded and should not be tolerated by the consumer! We have rights and one of those rights is the immediate cancellation of AT&T services of any kind. Perhaps when they start losing all kinds of money from disgruntled consumers a bell will go off in their heads much like it did for the cell phone companies and their "TWO YEAR CONTRACTS!"
People started to switch to other companies that provided the same or better service for less money, and in today's financial pinch a penny earned is a penny saved.
I for one intend to drop AT&T like a ton of bricks, and I hope others will do the same. There are to many other companies offering much better service, to have a company blackmail and coerce their customers into something that is twice as shoddy! NUFF SAID!

Well as of January 2013 this problem is still going on, at least for me, and has been for over a year since they "upgraded" me from regular DSL to Uverse. Oh and mine is slow ALL the time, all hours of the day and night.
