For the past five days my DSL connection (756K) becomes completely unusable between the hours of roughly 7pm until 5am. I have three dedicated lines, all connected two three separate computers. Each connection drops simultaneously in the evening. Most web pages will not load, and those that do take at least a couple minutes to do so. Also, it takes me an hour or more to download simple email attachments.
AT&T technical support has not been helpful at all. The reason that they offer no help is because according to AT&T's speed test site, my download speed is still around 500K which is the average speed that I get most of the time. They say that the problem is on my end seeing as the internet speed is the same. I find this hard to believe because all three of my lines slow at the exact same time every night.
I had this exact same problem for two entire months last year and for almost a month at the beginning of this year but the eventually resolved themselves. I use these lines for my home based business and this situation is becoming more and more irritating every evening.
Does anyone have any suggestions that may resolve my issue?
Thank you,
C Eugene

Are you saying you have three seperate DSL lines, or three computers hardwired to a single DSL gateway?
Have you tried a speedtest at www.speedtest.net during both good and bad times and compared the results?
Technically you can't complain that your residential DSL service is unsuitable for your business. If you actually paid for a business account you would have things like guaranteed up-time/throughput.

Yes, I have three separate dsl lines. Maybe I can't complain about the service being unsuitable for my business, but I can complain about it being completely unusable. Also, maybe I would have business dsl if the agent on the phone hadn't talked me out of getting business lines when I set up my accounts. They told me that I should just get residential dsl as it would save me money.
So, all three lines suffer equally at the same time? As DSL is not supposed to be susceptible to the "primetime gridlock" that has plagued cable in the past, I would think there is an external factor. From the time frame you mention, I would suggest an HID dusk-to-dawn yard light on your home or street light might be the culprit.
Is that the fastest DSL speed you could get? You might be eligible for Uverse Internet, have you checked?
The Uverse Internet is ADSL2/2+ as compared to your current ADSL, and can usually come close to either doubling the speed at your distance or doubling the distance at your speed.

As far as switching to Uverse, that would defeat the entire purpose for me. I need the DSL lines specifically for the ease of changing IP address. I have NxT1 and cable internet for all of my other purposes.
My contract will expire very soon and I am just choosing not to resign. I have never dealt with a company with worse customer service in my entire life. I honestly can't understand how AT&T is still in business. I have yet to talk to one person who has one good thing to say about their customer service. I have zero problems with my cable internet provider nor with telecom, mine T1 provider. However, when I do need to talk to their customer service they are extremely helpful.
Two days ago I was called a "know-it all twit" by an AT&T customer service agent. I feel like despite having a degree in computer engineering, I should not have to explain how dsl connections work to someone who works for the company that provides the service.

I don't believe it's yard light or anything of the sort. The reason being that I have three business parts that all live within a two mile radius of my home and I have recently found out that they are experiencing the exact same problem that I am in the exact same time frame.

Hello, I am experiencing exactly the same problem.
Every evening for the past two weeks, my DSL has slowed to basically unusable for about ten hours each night. This slow period always begins between 7:40 and 8:00pm, and ends between 5:00 and 5:20am the next morning. During the day my DSL speeds are perfectly fine.
I've scanned my PC with several anti-virus and malware programs (Norton, McAfee, MalwareBytes, etc.) and am fairly certain that my PC is not the cause of the problem.
My DSL Wintel modem is old (received back when I got DSL in the PacBell days), but as I said, it works flawlessly during the day. I do not use WiFi, it is a landline connection all the way to the PC.
Before two weeks ago, I never experienced more than an occasional sluggishness, but this is now an everyday occurrence. It's maddening, and my wife is beginning to pressure me to consider alternatives to ATT for my broadband service.
ATTAlexCM, I will send you my account and contact info via separate email, with the hope that you can troubleshoot and solve my issue. Thanks!
