I haven't tried Apple mail, but apparently it would be a waste of time.
You're not the only one who has problems with emai. My email has not worked correctly since Yahoo merged with AT&T. I am on my third email client and can't seem to find one that works correctly. I used Eudora for years with no problems, and I was really happy with it. Then Yahoo came along. After hours on-line, I was finally able to get Eudora to work, then all of a sudden I started to get invalid password messages. I worked with Tech Support on more than one occasion and had to go through all the usual verifications. Then, through no changes at all, it would suddenly start working. Unfortunately, it was temporary. Periodically, I would be unable to sign in on my e-mail client (Eudora) and would have to check my email on line. Then it would start working again without me making any changes. The last time I finally gave up and switched to Post Box. It went to work immediately, but a few days later, I started getting password errors again. If I went to the ATT Yahoo site and signed on, I could check my e-mail from Post Box, but it defeated the purpose of having an email client. I don't want to go to ATT Yahoo's site every time I check my email. Eventually, every time I tried to use Post Box, I'd get password errors. Then I switched to Thunderbird, which was listed as workable on ATT/Yahoo's site. It worked perfectly... for a few days. Then again, I started getting invalid password errors. Sometimes, signing on at the Yahoo site would work, sometimes, not. I haven't bothered to try and work with tech support, this time, since they seemed unable to resolve the problem last time.
I did sent a complaint email, but no one bothered to respond. I tried to email tech support so that I could send some screen shots. I thought maybe it I just changed my password, it might help. Unfortunately, my attempts to do that sent me into some kind of loop with the ATT/Yahoo website, where I kept following the steps, but never got to a place where I could change the password. I kept winding up back where I started. Except one time when I wound up on a page that Safari could not access and gave me a message stating the page was re-directed too many times. My history contains 26 different pages reached when trying to access information on how to change my password.
I give up!!! I'm going to explore my options for home telephone service, DSL, and email. At least I know I'm not the only one having this problem. I needed that vent time.

Hi ellendno,
Thank you for sharing your recent experience. I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing email trouble. Since this is account specific, please shoot me a Private Message (blue envelope, top-right corner), I would like to help.

I'm not sure that I am shooting you a message, but maybe????
I am certain from what I have read that this is not specific to my account. Many people seem to having problems. I used Eudora for years with no problems. Since ATA&T merged with Yahoo, it has been constant problems.
I have had tech support check all my settings and no problems were found. All of a sudden AT&T began reporting that my password was not accepted. I did not change my password and it still worked if I went to the on-line site, but I don't want to go to the online site. I would like to choose my own email client. After months of Eudora working intermittently, I gave up. Sometimes, I could go the the AT&T Yahoo site and sign on and than come back and open my email client, but not always.
Than I tried Post Box, it worked fine for a few days. I changed nothing, and suddenly started getting messages that my password was not accepted. Same problem, intermittent. Gave up on post box.
Next tried Thunderbird, since it was listed on the AT&T Yahoo website. Same problem. Worked great for a few days, now I can't sign on. I do not want to check my mail at the AT&T Yahoo site. I don't like the way it's configured and I don't want to use it.
As I mentioned earlier, I have had contact with tech support in the past. I have a MAC 10.6.8. Is AT&T Yahoo unable to work with Mac Users.
Can you tell me of any email client that will work with my Mac and be compatible with AT&T/Yahoo???
I just want to be able to check my mail.
Thank You,
Ellen {Personal content removed for your safety}

I'm having similar problems. Just last week all of my laptops started asking me for my server/account passwords in Outlook (or in Mail on my macbook) over and over. The email never comes through because the yahoo server says that the logon has failed, that the password is incorrect. But it's not incorrect: my iPhone and iPad get the email and I can log in to webmail with that password. There's something that's changed and it's not me or my computers. I called AT&T tonight to get help. The first time I got a guy who changed/corrected all my email account settings (except that they were right to begin with). The error went away for an hour. He was sincerely trying to help. I called back when the error returned and got a consultant who said I didn't know the special password I needed to login (he said that AT&T had some additional password attached to my account that I don't know that I needed to get from him) and then he reset my password without my permission after I said "do not do anything that will change my password" and without verifying that I was me. That cut me off from everything, of course. Then I asked him for his supervisor who did allow me to get my password back and said, oh he reset your password by accident, so sorry. The supervisor then told me that my problem was too complicated and I would have to subscribe to ConnectTech. I said no at first and then thought maybe I should go through with it but suddenly I saw that I could get my email again and said "no". The guy tried to talk me back into it and all of a sudden I smelled a scam. I really feel like ATT/Yahoo are creating these problems so that people will be forced to sign up for their tech service. I just searched and found that huge numbers of people are VERY dissatisfied with the quality of the service and the expertise of the consultants. REALLY? I've been an AT&T consumer all my adult life (I'm talking cell, home phone, highest speed internet) and if this email thing doesn't clear up, I'm going to figure something else out.

I have not been able to login to my ATT webmail account via my PC starting at noon MST on March 20. After I enter my email address and password I get directed to another site asking me to reset my password. This secondary site looks like it has been hacked. It also features a full page ad for Vistaprint. Surprisingly, I am able to read my emails on my iPhone.

A followup to my earlier post. It has been 12 hours and no resolution yet to the inability to login to ATT webmail.
AT&T has posted an alert addressing "Intermittent Password Issues"
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB4125
AT&T has identified several intermittent password-related issues that may impact customers, including the following:
- Customer email passwords suddenly stop working
- After password resets, customers are unable to access email
- Customers are getting caught in password reset loops
- The "Remember Me" password option for email isn't always working
- Customers are unable to send/receive email with new mail settings
Please be aware that AT&T is working to resolve these issues. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above and have been unsuccessful accessing your email or resetting your password, please Contact Us for more assistance.

Followup to my previous two posts. I called AT&T tech support at 877-722-3755 and they told me that there is a work around (actually a back door) solution.
Until this password issue is solved on att.net, you can login to your att webmail account through www.yahoo.com
Click on the mail icon and login with your usual email and password info.
I am finally able to check my emails after being out for over 24 hours.

This is what worked for me, I am using outlook 2010..... for now.... a stupid workaround...
Before opening outlook...
- Login your email via mail.yahoo.com
- Logout email from mail.yahoo.com
- Open your outlook
This works for me, but how long this will last before you have to login and logout again? I have no idea. Good luck ALL...

thanks.
this worked for me
last two days have been misery for me w/notorious long att support waits
you would think att tech would would let all OTHER support techs know this information ASAP
every ATT tech i talked to was trying to sincerely help -but in the end clueless as to what to do ("change password" etc etc)
in the end att is just another private corporate behemoth -wasteful and inefficient

Please excuse the lack of specificity and/or accuracy here--I am only barely computer literate any more (TBI). For the past few days I have had intermittent problems accessing my email account, but could by-pass that by either logging back on or going to "att.my.yahoo/mail" or something similar (multiple stabs in the dark.) Today there was NO way I could find to access my email, and I have had the same problems as everyone else--no automatic password pullup, no ability to change password, infinite password change do-loops, etc. My husband finally rescued me from my frustrations and managed to find a real person via ATT (877-722-3755). Bless this techie's heart, he changed the password for us and got us going, for the moment anyway. This looks to be a universal problem--is it really organizational, or is it hacker-prompted, or WHAT? Moot question. Don't really care--just hope I can get back into mail once I log off this time. :-(

I have had identical problems. Can't get to my other yahoo accounts. Keeps showing only the bellsouth.net account. Doesn't recognize sign in. This goes on and on. That is only one of the AT&T problems.

I use online email and I cannot get to my contacts. If I click on contacts a blank tab opens and I cannot close it unless I log off. I have contacted yahoo and At&T and cannot get any help. I have tried my account on 5 different PC's and still cannot open my email contacts. Is anyone else getting fed up with this.
I would use pop 3 mail if I could but I travel and use other PC's so why can't online email work properly?

Yes, I have similar problems.
- Have AT&T DSL . Yahoo mail @swbell.net
- Use Apple mail.app 4.5 OSX 10.6.8 MacBook Pro
- For 2 years all worked smoothly until recently I cannot receive or send via Apple mail. Password request continuously appears. Connection doctor cannot connect to incoming or outgoing server.
- AT&T support resets my password & after several attempts it will work for about 24 hrs or until I next login. AT&T continues to promote their $15/month support but no guarantee.
- Spoke with Apple & they analyze trouble as server. Mobileme account works & yahoo mail receives & sends mail as does iPhone.
- Am at the end of the road & request assistance for solution or next step.
Thanks John

I have the same issue. to me started occuring towards end of 2011.
No change to my password/email address on att.net for 3 years before that.
I have gone back and forth with ATT tech support for several months and no solution other than (let me reset your password).
Only solution (that is not really a solution), is to access webmail first, then I can unblock the login/password error I get and use outlook on my PC or Mac.
I am done with this and requesting a refund for a major portion of my internet fees for the past several months (as I use email as a big portion of that part of the service), and moving my email to something else other than att.net (yes a major pain in the *** since I have to update all my contacts etc. but I am at the point it is worth doing that as it is less painful than putting up with this issue on att.net any longer).
I am also consdering switching my internet service to someone other than ATT due to this issue.
good luck to those who decide to stick it out longer....

On Tees morning ATT tech finally admitted that ATT experiencing serious server problems with Yahoo caused by the separation of the 2. She gave a solution (temporary) but unfortunately id does not always work. No indication given of when server problem will be fixed. More than one ATT tech claimed trouble caused by mail program. I took computer to Apple Genius bar & they set up an account on their computer & received the same error message.
No good solution known by me. If any satisfaction we know where the problem lies.

I'm trying what PC_168 tried with logging onto the email account on Yahoo then opening our email client. We have a more complex setup at our home and have a house full of frustrated people very disappointed in AT&T. We started Internet service with the company way back years before SNET was bought by AT&T, and I started as a phone customer in 1968. Here's what we've got with our 4 computers:
A. Computers - 2 Dell desktop PC's, 1 Lenovo ThinkPad, 1 new MacBook Pro and an iPad 2
B. Email clients - Outlook Express, MS Outlook 2003, Outlook 2011 for the Mac, Mac Mail
C. OS - Windows XP, Windows 7, Mac OS, Mac IOS on the iPad
D. 8 SNET email accounts
The only device reliably sending and receiving emails is the iPad, which doesn't uses the POP protocol. This has to be significant!
During any day in the past month, all of the computers except the iPad have been (are) unable to send or receive with one, several or all of the email accounts. And the ability to process email often changes during the course of the day!
Tech support in India was at first unwilling to help because she said email is an issue with the software vendor (ie, Microsoft). not AT&T. She then relented and basically changed my settings to what they already were. When that didn't work, she told me I need help from the subscription service. I told her she had been no help at all and hung up on her. Much to my surprise, later that day I got an email welcoming me to paid support. She or someone in her chain of command enrolled me without my permission! Fortunately, the person I spoke to at AT&T rescinded that subscription.
After a robotic tech support detected line noise, we got AT&T to send a repairman to check the modem, and he replaced it, even though there was just a marginal performance issue with the old one. (It was quite an old Speedstream.) What irks me about all this is that I am having a problem that spans 3 operating systems and 3 email clients yet doesn't exist with the only "computer" that doesn't use POP, so the problem doesn't lie with my software or computers.
I am reluctantly starting to change our email addresses to forwarders based on our web page. Once everyone had implemented our forwarder we will have to drop AT&T and get Internet service with our cable company. What a sad situation.

I have been working on a firends computer with similar email password issues. The strange thing is he has 2 accounts setup in Outlook Express and one works and the other gets the username password login error when trying to login.
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com',
Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Incorrect username or password.',
Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
It started when he was having internet speed issues and after troubleshooting it I realized it was his wireles router. I called and talked to at&t tech support to see if a combination Netgear modem\router\wireless router would work with at&t and that way I could eliminate his old speedstream modem. After pruchasing the Netgear modem\router\wireless router I called tech support back to set it up. My friend forgot his login password so the representative reset it and gave me a new one. After logging all was good until I made the mistake of changing the password on his primary email account to the one the representative had given me, that began the start of the username password login issues. After calling back tech support to find out why the one account would not login they told me that the primary email address and password was not the same anymore for both email and to login into the internet, they told me they changed that about a year ago, why I have no idea! She reset the password and I created a new one but could not login, she bascially told me that if I could login into the online webmail there was nothing they could do, because they didn't support Outlook Express.
The initial problem started last week on 4/10. So I started looking for a solution to the problem. I even went as far as installing Outlook Express on my computer (I use Thunderbird) and setting up his account. I also setup his email account on my Thunderbird and that didn't work either. I believe it was the morning of 4/12 when I was doing some searches that I decided to just try opening Outlook Express and see what happens, to my amazement it started downloading messages. So I went to his house and it worked on his computer until Sunday morning 4/15 when he called me and said it stopped working again. I made another call to at&t tech support to change the password again and that didn't work either. Have searched to see if it could be another issue, but cannot find anything that will fix the issue. So after a few password changes and spending hours on the phone with tech support he is in the same boat he was in. There should be no reason that 3rd party emil clients should not be able to login the the at&t mail server. Why should everyone who has an at&t account have to login to their webmail to send and receive emails, that is ridiculous!! I hope there admins get their crap together and come up with a solution for this problem. He has been asking me if he sould go to cable and pretty soon if they don't come up with a solution I'm going to tell him I think that is the way to go!!

I am doing work for two different people with email issues much like those described so far. I'll summarize the parts everyone posting here is familar with and focus on what may be different. One client has two different bellsouth.net email addresses - one keeps having the general issue which comes and goes over the course of a day or days but the other one has been fine since changing the server settings. The other client's problems started after she reset the password, and here comes the fun part - she noticed that she cannot receive emails from her bellsouth.net email account into outlook express while her iphone is on. Turn it off and a minute or so later outlook express can log in sucessfully and download new emails. Turn the iPhone back on, check email (and the iPhone does not have any send/receive problems), and going forward the OE does not work until the phone is turned off again. I verified this "relationship" but am at a loss as to what it means. I am having the other person - who does have an iPhone which works consistantly with both accounts - check if the same thing happens to them. Hopefully by us sharing information about our personal observations we can make some progress torwards resolving this problem. Good luck!

I have an sbcglobal.net email account, and this is a sub account of my husband's sbcglobal account. We have had these accounts for many years. I just purchased a my first MAC Book and am trying to set up email. The pop and smtp settings are not correct, there must be a back door way to get to these mail servers. I can access my sbcglobal.net email from my iPAD and my iPhone, and of course directly from my broswer. This is an ATT mail server issue. What are the correct POP and SMPT settings for my sbcglobal.net email account which is a sub account???

You are certainly not alone. I have had this same problem for over two months. Sometimes I cannot get onto my yahoo accounts with the same message. Can only get into bellsouth (at&t) mail. I have to wait and try it again or it locks me out of the yahoo accounts. When you call them, they lie to you about what is causing it, making it look like it's your fault when you know it is not. After reading all these complaints exactly like mine, I realize they have caused their own monster by letting yahoo monitor our email so they can blast us with product commercials on our email sign ins. Believe me, yahoo is making a fortune off of us by using our emails to sell to companies wanting to advertise at our expense and at&t is probably making money off of yahoo!

Well, here we are, years later and this problem just keeps on happening over and over and over again. POP3 mail is one of the simplest and oldest protocols on the net so it frustrates me to no end that it just can't be fixed. I have had and have been researching this problem over the years and thought I would share some of my condensed observations with you since, right now, my mail is down and without it I have plenty of spare time:
1. Simply logging on to the WebMail portal will, in many cases, fix the problem, but only temporarily. Personally, I don’t like to use WebMail because it requires the use of heavy scripting in a language that could potentially, due to known and unpublished exploits within the Java technology, make your personal information available to others. Using your browser, select ‘view source’ on the portal home page and see what I mean. I have also heard others suggest that AT&T has a huge investment in this site and is forcing visitation to drive up their marketing numbers in an attempt to make the site more valuable to potential advertisers. Boy I hope this is not the case, I rather like to think that they are simply technically deficient and are having problems dealing with large-scale email integration and management.
2. Turning off mobile mail clients clears the problem. This is an interesting one that surfaces an even darker reality that may be affecting many users. Most email clients can be set to check for new mail every few minutes to give you a heads up. If this interval is set too short, considering thousands of accounts per server, server utilization goes way up and the ISP has to buy more iron to run it. Not good for the ISP. So, in a nutshell, the ISP can place a longer timed “release lock” on the last access that will reduce server activity by keeping you out until this much longer time interval expires. Your mobile device, or another computer, is keeping this timed delay loop active by checking for mail, so by turning it off, eventually your account clears, and you can log on. Now the dark side; I mentioned “another computer”, which may be the one you have at the office or at home but it might also be a hackers server. Virus or malware may have captured your password data from your system registry, uploaded it to wherever, decoded it, and along with you easy to grab email address is camping out on your email account reading all your inbound email traffic. Oh, it won’t delete them, it will leave a copy for you on the AT&T server so as not to alert you of what is happening and in a few hours or days it will quit for a while and let you get back in – sound familiar? Scan for viruses often and change your password occasionally but remember, if you change your main password, you will also need to change it in your DSL modem since it is used by the modem to logon to DSL services.
3. The AT&T server you are attempting to connect to is effectively down. This gets a bit muddied because, in a large mail deployment, the various parts of “logging on” is divided up over more than just one server. This can give interesting results especially if, say, the password checking server is the one that is down or swamped to the point of time-outs but not “down” enough to trigger a switchover or alert network control techs. It is also possible that AT&T could be experiencing a denial of service attack from unfriendlies, this could last a while and impact various parts of their system. One other performance consideration is the “friendly” snooping by the NSA. They are currently required to read all of your emails. I understand that a huge new facility is being built out west that will add massive computing capacity to eschelon and may improve overall Internet performance. I don’t know if it will help but it is sure in the mix and we are spending a lot of tax money on it.
4. Captcha is not popping up any more? Usually, after a spat, logging on to WebMail clears the problem but I have found that this happens only when you go through a multi-level captcha scenario. If you have done this you know what I mean. I suspect what is happening in this process is something akin to clearing a corrupt password cache on the server for your account. As of late, captcha is not there any more and, when it is not, the WebMail trick doesn’t seem to work. We now appear to be out of options.
What can be done to help?
Tools – In the old days some (mainframe) email clients would tell you at logon the date and time the account was last accessed. That was great because you could see if someone else had accessed your account. With the newer PC email clients this would be difficult but you certainly should be able to request that an “activity report” be sent to you from AT&T that would show all details (including IP addresses) of when and how your account was being used. Would that be too much to ask?
Another Tool - One interesting email application or “plug-in” I had in mind would be one that would hold your actual email address in a hidden, securely encrypted way and would then run upon starting your email client to insert your proper email address and then run when you exited and insert a “dummy” email address. This would only allow your email address to be visible system wide when your email client was actually active. I thought a good possibility for the “dummy” address would be spam@uce.gov. This would save time by having the spammers simply forward their spam directly to the feds. Kidding aside, it would help safeguard your address and be a defense against email client highjacking. I have never seen anything like this, have you?
The other thing to do is turn off that timed check for new mail. Do you really need it? I don’t want to access my mail until I am at that point in what I am doing and “You’ve Got Mail” is a distraction. Another thing is to get rid of that saved password. Key it in each time – it’s a lot more trouble but a lot more secure. For fun, do a search on windows password decoders and see what’s out there. Anyone with a thumb drive can have your password in a minute or two. And then lastly, consider a smaller, more secure, email provider if you feel your mail is really important. They are out there, but be careful. An interesting one has popped up lately and is currently seeking funding that will, when introduced, by the Calyx Institute promise to maintain encryption of your mail from your computer all the way through their servers to the destination. Now that’s the way to do it…..
Good luck with your adventure and keep the wind at your back.

All, I was initially getting this problem, until I realized something. When logging on to the web side, you have to enter @att.net after your user name. When you set up the email account for ATT in Outlook 2010, your username is automatically input into the "username" field, but it cuts off the @att.net. I changed it from being just my.user.name to my.user.name@att.net and then configured everything else as instructed for WinXP. After having done that, I have never been asked for my username/password from Outlook 2010 again. I imagine it will be the same for you.
Hope that works! Best of luck.

I wish that were the answer for all of us, but I had set up our 8 email account usernames with the (in our case) @snet.net suffix. The inability for our computers to send/receive from one or more of our accounts varies from day to day and even within the course of a day.
