It happened to me around 2:30 pm MST.. I have Outlook 03... so it is AT&T not outlook or Microsoft. I can go online to Yahoo and get my emails but can't get them downloaded from their servers... not sure what is going on.

It's not just OE or Outlook 2007, it's all POP3 email software/programs. There is definitely a sudden technical problem going on with Bellsouth/AT&T email in the Southeast. I'm in Atlanta, GA. Where are you guys? I haven't changed my POP/SMTP settings in a decade and my internet and non-BSout/AT&T email is working fine, so I think there is a temporary problem going on that needs to be addressed by tech support ASAP! This is not a situation in which users need to "check their settings" - unless a major fundamental change has occurred in April 2011.

I use Outlook 2007 and have not changed anything in my settings. I am constantly being prompted to enter my login information in Outlook 2007, and those settings aren't being accepted -- yet, I can access mail via Firefox and the web site just fine. There is definitely a sudden and very irritating problem that started a couple of hours ago. I'm located in Connecticut.

Something in the Southeast is wrong mail.bellsouth.net gives error code 999. Using Thunderbird.
The pop.yahoo settings do not help.

I'm in Alabama and e-mail stopped working for Thunderbird and Outlook mid afternoon - keeps asking for and not accepting user name and password. The chat line tech seemed to be unaware of any major AT&T problem - not good, because many, many folks have been wasting time troubleshooting their settings, etc. when the problem and solution must be with AT&T.
I was very pleased to find this forum and learn that I was not the problem!

Just spent 59 minutes on the phone with AT&T Tech Support. I couldn't receive email, only able to send. Tried everything through online troubleshooting prior to contacting them. Same story as everyone else..."Not an AT&T issue. Must be Outlook 2007."
The tech was very patient and she finally got it to work using the old BellSouth server information (information I have never had or used). I have always had pop.att.yahoo.com and smtp.att.yahoo.com with SMTP authentication and 995 in and 465 out with SSL checked/selected.
New settings that work are:
-Incoming mail server: mail.bellsouth.net
-Outgoing mail server: mail.bellsouth.net
More settings:
Outgoing server tab uncheck everything.
Advanced tab incoming 110 and outgoing 25 with no SSL checked/selected.
I am amazed that she had not heard of any issues. She only knew of email server maintenance from a few days ago (when mine and everyone else's problems started). She stated these old BellSouth settings will not work in the near future when the email migration is complete to the new pop and smtp servers. My best guess is that AT&T is still conducting maintenance and migration on the new servers.
Hopefully this helps others.

I'm in western KY....I have also been having this same problem...only 'intermittently' and it begain a coupld of days ago. It is frustrating as it starts working fine when I'm in the middle of 'troubleshooting'.
I am going to try the 'solution' given and hope it will solve the problem when if/when it 'occurs' again. ![]()

JayGee,
As far as I can tell it is not a "settings" issue at all. It is the mail servers at AT&T/Yahoo. They are apparently updating things and every so often, it causes email clients to be unable to credential to the servers. No amount of tweaking or tech support seems to help. eventually they fix the problem at the server level and the clients are able to "talk" to the servers. Really frustrating...I have 6 email accounts, 3 are critical. This has happened twice since Sunday afternoon...come on AT&T...really?

Glad it worked. I just don't understand why old settings I have never used since I became an AT&T DSL customer are working. It must the email server migration going on.

I guess they must be at it again. This morning I cannot send email using these setting...get the following error message:
Sending' reported error (0x800CCC80) : 'None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server.'
Tried changes methods, but still did not work
Sure hope they get things working soon.

This is not just an Outlook problem. I'm on a Mac with Mac Mail and having the same problem. I've spent hours on the phone, tried their paid Connect Tech service (worthless and got my money back) and more time with tier 2 support (a joke). No one seems to be able to admit that the problem is on their end or do anything except confirm that, YES, MY SETTING ARE CORRECT ... FOR THE TENTH TIME!! Very frustrating. Come on AT&T!

Solution: If you have the AT&T / Yahoo POP3 and SMTP servers correctly entered into the Outlook 2007 Account Setup, and you still get a pop-up requesting your user name and password or an error message: Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted.; then you need to login into att.yahoo.com/mail; Options; Mail Options; Account Information; Sign In (enter e-mail address and pswd); and verify that the e-mail address marked Primary in the AT&T / Yahoo Member Center matches the Outlook 2007 Account Logon Information User Name. If they don't match, then make the appropriate changes. I have discovered that any Outlook account which is not marked as Primary in the Member Center requires the non-primary person to Sign In to the AT&T / Yahoo Home page or Mail before Outlook will receive or send e-mails successfully.
AT&T does not support any e-mail clients: Outlook, Thunderbird; etc. You can pay for support from an AT&T contract company to resolve the problem. I chose to figure it out.
My many Google searches to resolve the Outlook 2007 receive / send errors resulted in one of the following solutions: correct the AT&T POP3 and SMTP server names; lengthen Outook Advance Server Timeout; turn off Norton E-mail scanning. None of these corrected my problem. I hope the above solution resolves the problems you are having with the AT&T and Outlook 2007.

I am having this problem of Outlook 2007 intermittently asking for a Password, even though it is already populated.
I have tried different POP3 settings as mentioned in the forums, "mail.bellsouth.net", "inbound.att.net", neither of these work at all. I am using "pop.att.yahoo.com", and it does work some of time.
Outlook 2007 has worked properly for a long time (over a year), and in the past 2 months or so has started the "please enter user name and password" message.
Since Mac users are reporting the problem also, Microsoft may not have any blame. Seems to point to either Yahoo or ATT.

I 100% agree. I have Outlook 2007 for over 1 year now. This is about the 10th time that when I would use the Outlook mail program, it would repeatedly ask me for my passwords and to save them. I enter them, and again it asks. Next I do as requested by AT&T's help section, and verify all my emails work from att/yahoo mail online. Guess what, no surprise!! The email addresses and passwords work just fine. So is it really my Microsoft Program or is it AT&T not willing to at least have enough common respect for their paying clients to at least send a message with times they will be working on their email systems or post on their main pages as updates. By expecting their customers to stay, I would think this would be a priority.
P.S. I did run like always the tool repair kit. Surpise it said it worked fine but Outlook said otherwise. I also even tried disabling the firewalls and the virus program I run. If it weren't for my iphone and just having to be patient for contracts to expire....I would have already turned off my services....internet in particular and transferred to another company as I have had nothing but problems with my internet connections and emails for almost 1 year solid!!!!!
Very Unhappy Client!!!

A message asking to confirm the password has been popping up non-stop for the past two days for my bellsouth.net emails. I usually hit cancel and then OL2007 starts fetching mail again but if I am not around when the message pops up, all mail retrieval stops with an error message. I have not made any changes to my account. This is a new problem that does not seem to be resolving itself, so I thought it might be worth reporting it here with the hope that somebody will see it and fix it. I am not the only one with this problem.

There is another thread here called "Enter Network Password" which lists all of the same issues. This is not an Outlook issue - it is an AT&T problem. It appeared that they had fixed the problem in early October because the pop ups stopped but it came roaring back on November 1. I am once again getting 10+ pop ups per hour which stops all mail - and everything else on my computer.
AT&T must be doing something internally which is affecting so many of its users. Please fix it!

I fixed my Outlook 2007 by changing the Inbound and Outbound to the standard Yahoo settings:
- Incoming Mail Server pop.mail.yahoo.com
- Outgoing Mail Server smtp.mail.yahoo.com
I changed this Friday, and have not been asked for Username/Pswd once.

After a couple of days of fighting this Outlook password error problem, I finally called AT&T tech support. The tech rep checked out my system, then discussed the issue with her level 2 tech.
The bottom line is that, after an update, Microsoft's servers and the ATT/Yahoo servers are not communicating properly. It is an issue they are working on and a new update should resolve the issue when released.
At least they are acknowledging the problem
