Try this - it worked for me.
I fixed my Outlook 2007 by changing the Inbound and Outbound to the standard Yahoo settings:
- Incoming Mail Server pop.mail.yahoo.com
- Outgoing Mail Server smtp.mail.yahoo.com
I changed this four days ago, and have not been asked for Username/Pswd since.

Seems to be solved by changing to:
Incoming Mail Server pop.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Mail Server smtp.mail.yahoo.com
i am running 3 email using POP pc's, two XP, one SERVER 2003 all using Outlook 2003 or 2007 and using 4 different bellsouth.net emails. All had same problem, all repaired.
Thank you so much posters above.

Hello ALL,
I had this problem before also, the issue is the windows update on outlook 2007, this then creates an issue with AT&T .net email.
I went back and restored my PC to a previous date prior to the "outlook 2007 update" and the problem has gone away.
As usual Microsoft puts updates out there that have not been fully tested.
Another reason I have my PC set to alert about updates, but DO NOT auto install - from now on I am waiting a year on all Microsoft updates before installing them!

Why do want to use an older version of OL2007 without bug fixes and security updates when simply changing your mail settings, as shown above, works?

Great! Maybe if we keep mentioning it, ATT might hear about it, and start giving out valid info.
What a novel concept!! ![]()

Nope, still didn't work for me.
Only getting the pop-up asking for username and password a couple times a day on my computer, haven't seen it yet on this computer since updating the server info.
But I updated my boss' computer at the same time, and he's still getting the pop-up every few minutes.
Any other ideas? I've tried everything I can think of, and then some.

Same problem for me. No answer yet on the other thread. I have tried every setting - the new inbound/outbound ones, the old pop and smtp.att.yahoo.com and the suggested pop.mail.yahoo.com and smtp. None of them work. I get constant popup boxes for my network password from all 8 of the AT&T email accounts that are coming into one Outlook. My non-AT&T accounts don't have any issues at all; they are working fine, and I don't have any popups from any of them.

@jeannieology: You should go to the AT&T webmail site and see if you can access your mail from there to make sure that the password is correct for each of your AT&T email accounts. If so, go back and check the Outlook advanced settings: Incoming (POP3) Port = 995 and Outgoing (SMTP) Port = 465 and that you have indicated that you are using SSL encryption and make sure the encrypted connection (SSL) box is checked. Also, on the first page of settings, make sure that the "Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" box is NOT checked.

I can access my webmail for all the accounts via webmail. I checked that right away in spite of the fact that I had changed no passwords and none of my Outlook settings when the network password box situation started. I have the right ports & SSL settings, SPA unchecked, etc. I've been using Outlook for 12 or so years now, have set up email on it for businesses and individuals -- info just so you know I'm very familiar with all the settings and immediately check with the ISP when something like this crops up to see if something has changed.
I usually have one quirky account on a fairly regular basis, but this time it's ridiculous. I can't type more than 3 or 4 characters before the password box pops up again. When this started getting really awful over a week ago, I had the pop.att.yahoo.com and smtp.att.yahoo.com settings. So I went to the AT&T website and updated when I found the new settings (inbound.att.net and outbound.att.net). At the same time, I verified all settings (outgoing & advanced) for each account to make sure they matched AT&T's settings guide, but none of it helped. AT&T tech "support" couldn't help (I just had 12 popups while trying to type that sentence.) My non-AT&T email accounts are working just fine in Outlook.
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB4015
I have read several things about a recent Microsoft update possibly causing the problems. I did another update and rebooted hoping that would help. Still nothing but complete and utter frustration.

@jeannieology: I am sorry you are having difficulties. You might want to do what I did at first, which is to take the bellsouth accounts out of the Send & Receive All group that fetches mail frequently and set up them up in their own group to send/receive less frequently, like once or twice a day, so you are not bombarded with the popup error messages. If you cannot wait that long to get mail from those accounts, I really don't have an answer for you, but I definitely sympathize. Meanwhile, while not 100% error free, the normal yahoo (not att) mail settings seem to work the best for me, at least so far, so I would give that a try for a day or so. Good luck!!!!

A suggestion that worked for me at took less than 5 minutes to set up is to set up your e-mail accounts on gmail. This way should you switch to another internet provider you will not need to change your e-mail online or in Outlook ever again. (I would leave the primary AT&T/Yahoo account that you set up on the respective web site initially.) Here are the steps.
Once you go into Outlook 2007, go in "Tools" and then "Account Settings" and delete the ATT/Yahoo set up
Select "New" and in the "Your Name Field" Enter your name just as you want it to appear on your e-mails
In the "E-mail Address" field enter your complete Gmail e-mail address as you set it up on gmail.com
Type and Re-Type your Password in the fields indicated
Click "Next" (do not select manually configure) as Outlook 2007 will automatically put in the server addresses, etc., You do not need to configure anything at all.
Once the set-up is complete go back into "Tools" then "Account Settings" and select "More Settings" then "Advanced" and select your desired options to leave a copy of the e-mail on the Gmail server
Please remember to remove the AT&T/Yahoo set up from Account Settings or the pop-up asking for a password will continue to appear even if you set the gmail account as your default.
If you tire of logging into and out of your various e-mail accounts, you may go on the G-mail web site and set up e-mail forwarding as well.
Hope this helps.

Not that it's a solution, per se, but by process of elimination I've found the problem is almost entirely resolved by letting Outlook be the only client to automatically check for email. I changed the configuration on both my iPhone and iPad to only do a manual send/receive and the pop-ups in Outlook have gone away (in the last 4 days, I've only had 1 popup, rather than the 15/day I was seeing). I hate that this is the 'solution' I'm forced to live with.
So, this tells me AT&T has a problem on their end when more than one client attempts to access the same email account. This is inexcusable. When you pay more than $100/month for their U-verse service plus $60/month for iPhone service it's absolutely pathetic they configure their side to restrict how you can access your email. For that kind of money, I should be guaranteed of no problems with whatever method I want to use (or methods) to manage my email - and not just brushed off like there's something wrong with my Outlook configuration (how "level one" of them, really).

I sent a PM about this a week ago - I also have these problems with Bellsouth.net domain e-mail addresses. I have Outlook 2010 with two e-mail addresses. The password is correct, and I've tried both the att and Yahoo servers with limited success. AT&T - when are you going to fix this? It's been on going for some time and these posts seem to indicate it's not user error!

I have been having the same problems for a month here in New Smyrna Beach. I have tried all of the setting from all of the posters and wonder why ATT cannot get this thing fixed. I nee dmy email and this morning it went crazy again. All of the other pop3 email address, non ATT, in my Outlook 2007 work perfectly. ihave even reset my iPhone to manual as suggested. Nothing works.
We pay big money ATT to make this sytem work and my guess is they can't fix it because they opted to outsource email to Yahoo who is having its own problem. So ATT either fix the problem and post the solution here and do it now or look to see oyur subscribers start moving over to somebody who can make it work. What a sad comentary on historic company.
Looking for a solution and don't tell me to call Microsoft as it is obvioulsy not thei rproblem as the other email addreses work. And why do I have to manual my iPhone?

I use Outlook 2003 and have been having problems with this on and off for several months but much worse today. I have multiple accounts configured. In addition to my primary AT&T (sbcglobal.net) account as well as several sub-accounts, I also have accounts configured for hotmail, gmail and my own domain as well. No problem with any of the non-ATT accounts. Oddly, my ATT sub accounts are more often than not OK using the legacy mail server settings; it seems that only my primary account is regularly affected by the authentication issue. I've tried the new mail server settings for the primary account but that didn't resolve the problem. I've also tried disabling my firewall, anti-virus, etc. and that did't make any difference either.

It is interesting that ATT/Yahoo Email continues to have problems for so many users. ATT either can't find the problem, or is not interested in devoting resources to it.
I was originally a Bellsouth.net customer, and was migrated to ATT. Later, ATT farmed out their email service to Yahoo. All went well. My main account is "user@bellsouth.net"; two sub-accounts are "user@bellsouth.net", and one sub-account is user@att.net.
Recap: For months (years?) Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 worked fine with the old Bellsouth.net settings, and with the new ATT setting of "pop.att.yahoo.com" and "smtp.att.yahoo.com". Around September 2011, Outlook 2007 started displaying error messages saying that the user name or password is incorrect. The User and Pswd fields in the error msg window were already populated with the valid data from Outlook, so I just click ok, and Outlook 2007 sends the same login data again, and it works. This would happen intermittently several times a day for the four accounts, but not all four accounts every time. Strange.
Finally, I got irritated enough to do research and try to find a solution. There are many entries on the WWW of folks have the same issue, and all are ATT subscribers. Many are DSL subscribers, and some seem to be Uverse subscribers. (Would this problem have something to do with Uverse Email service being integrated with Yahoo?) Many users reporting this problem are using Outlook, some say they use email apps for Macs and some use Eudora. This would eliminate Microsoft, right?
I began trying different settings for the Inbound/Outbound servers. With all server settings tried, I did not change the Mail Port; I always used Incoming Mail Port: 995, secure connection (SSL) checked, and Outgoing Mail Port: 465, secure connection (SSL) checked. I found that the settings of "pop.mail.yahoo.com" and "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" work very well. Nowhere on ATT's web site or Help Files is this Inbound/Outbound suggested. I did try their official setting of "inbound.att.net" and "outbound.att.net"; these never worked for me at all.
Now, three and a half weeks later, the settings of "pop.mail.yahoo.com" and "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" continue to work pretty well, although not 100%. Once every few days, my main account email (not sub-account) gives the UserName/Pswd error message. I have nearly eliminated this message by changing the frequency of checking for email on that account to 4 hours. All of the others are set to check ≈30 minute intervals.
So these questions come to mind:
- Are subscribers with other legacy domains having problems, such as sbcglobal, attworldnet, pacbell, etc?
- Have some subscribers’ issues been resolved with other "custom" settings? See this msg at ATT Forums: http://forums.att.com/t5/Email/Outlook-2007-keeps-
asking-for-user-name-and-password/m-p/2965671#M390 ...

I have solved this problem for several computers in my business. The fix can be found at:
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB4015
Although AT&T claims that the old settings should still work, they do not always work. Changing the inbound and outbound server addresses has fixed this problem every time. You should restart your computer after making these changes.
My question is why did AT&T not notify users of the configuration change. I know that I did not receifve an e-mail message notifying me of the change.

But the stupid ATT tool still stuffs in the old ATT value instead of MAIL. Get with it ATT!

I tried the inbound/outbound settings and they worked for a few days and now this morning the pop up is giving me the error message again. I tried the pop settings suggested earlier, I have tried them all and the bottom line is changes work for a while and then the pop ups come back. I am convinced this has nothing to do with what kind of settings we use. It is an AT&T/Yahoo problem and they are not addressing it.

I am pretty sure that around 1AM ET on Friday 9 Dec 2011, there was a problem with the AT&T mail server. It would not accept my password at all, but then after a few minutes, it did. When the servers go down, we get popups. This time it resolved itself after a few minutes. For the record, I have a bellsouth.net account and am using the normal yahoo settings without the att reference since the one with the att setting exhibited more problems than this one. The inbound/outbound settings do not work at all for me.

The problem must be through out the AT&T system regardless of browser being used. I tried twice to get technical support and after hours of effort was able to be transferred to the AT&T Yahoo advanced support level only to get disconnected with no call back.
This company has no feeling for their customers. A friend of mine who retired from AT&T told me to just forget about getting any help. She says when people complained they would just tell them to go some place else.

The problem returned a day after I thought it was fixed with different server settings. But I noticed this problem for a couple of weeks now with still no resolution. Come on ATT. What's up?
