Uncheck the 'Use secure connection' box.

DO NOT USE SECURE AUTHENTICATION
For the latest FireFox 3.6.3 (as of April 29, 2010)
Use Connection Security SSL/TLS
But DO NOT use secure authentication. Leave
UNchecked the "Use secure authentication" box
for both POP and SMTP
And remember, if you have multiple FireFox email
accounts, you need to create a separate SMTP
server for each one. That is, every account will
have both a POP3 and an SMTP server for the
account name.
To set up an SMTP server for each of several
accounts, go to the bottom of the account settings
box, to the "Outgoing Server" SMTP. Click on the
SMTP item, and Add and Edit boxes will appear on
the right-hand panel.

Correction-- my reference to "Firefox" was intended to be Thunderbird.
