I recently received an email from AT&T announcing a number of changes the terms of service. Among the items listed was the statement, "We have added language explaining that you will keep your email address if you choose to terminate service." Is that true for those of us AT&T customers who have prodigy.net email addresses? If so, how do I go about canceling my dial-up which I never use, with the assurance that my email service won't be interrupted? I would appreciate any help or information that members of this forum can offer.
Thanks.

Doesn't anyone from AT&T monitor this board? Why no response after all this time?

I still haven't heard an official word. I, too have been a faithful customer for nearly 12 or 13 years. I can't afford to change my email address due to my business. But I also can't afford to keep paying for Dial-up service that I haven't used for years upon years. I tried looking into ATT DSL as a way to keep my prodigy address, but they don't serve my part of town. Also, with this lack of response to my inquiry here on this message board, I don't think I could trust AT&T enough in the future to buy any of their services.
I'm sure there are many prodigy members out there with a similar problem. I'm glad to hear from you and to know that I'm not the only one confused by this email situation.

Yes, there are still a few of us out there thinking the same thing. I get email messages from ATT from time to time always containing a bunch of HTML chaos but buried in it is this message:
Our goal continues to be to make you a very satisfied customer. If you are experiencing any issues and would like to speak to a customer support representative, please contact us at 1-877-722-3755.
Why not give them a call. I've not got around to it because I anticipate a long wait and an uninformed customer service person.

I also have just gotten around to canceling my prodigy.net dial-up account. I've been on Verizon FIOS for over a year and had stopped checking the prodigy account. I finally went on and migrated all the emails I wanted to save. In the process of figuring out how to cancel, I talked with a rep named Chris who was a great deal of help. He told me that once I had completed migrating the emails to be archived, I should call an 888 number to cancel directly. I just tried the number; in about 5 minutes the deed was done, and I was given a confirmation number. The account is still being billed through the end of my credit card cycle, but it appears to be gone.
The number is {Personal content removed for safety}
I am hopeful that this will not create a problem with my active FIOS account.
If there is a problem, I'll post a message here.
Best of luck!

There was a problem. Once the Prodigy dial-up account was canceled, I lost access to my Verizon FIOS email account. I started Live Chat with Verizon FIOS support. Within just a few minutes, the representative was able to reset my FIOS account from his end, and everything was fine -- I did not lose any of the emails I had kept in subfolders in my Verizon.net FIOS account.

This is a reply to all seven of the questions below. I called after about an hour of tracking down Prodigy. I was told that instead of paying $22.95 per month for my dial up service which I have not used for years just to keep my . prodigy.net email address that I could pay $7.95/mo. This would give me ATT support and keep the email address ending in prodigy.net.............or for free, I could cancel the service and keep the prodigy.net but have no support from ATT if there were a problem with my email..............hope this helps all of you who have paid tooooo much for tooooo long for nothing but an address...........good luck.

I'm in the same boat except I'm still using dial-up modem...lol Good forbid if I have to download anything! Seeing these messages is pushing me closer to switching to FIOS...as long as I get to keep my prodigy.net address.

First, I want to thank macsranch for his post. I certainly no what he means about spending an hour on the phone. My card had expired and I needed to update that. When I called the number listed in my email telling me the card was invalid, it was ATT just like I would call about my home phone service. Those people had no idea what prodigy was - even when speaking to their supervisor.
Hence, the BIG thank you to macsranch. Anyway, I called the number he listed and the people at that number could not help me any longer. The lady said last week (April 24, 2012) they changed the number for Prodigy.
The lady told me that they lowered the price to keep only the email address to the $7.95 as mentioned. HOWEVER, the free part - you do not keep your email address for prodigy. You have to go to Yahoo and set up a yahoo account and have the prodigy account merged to the Yahoo account. If you want your EXACT email address, you MUST pay the $7.95 per month.
Also, while I was on the phone with the dialup billing people at 2598, I asked for a tech support number for prodigy accounts.
I'm set until my card expires again. I hope this info will help someone before they lose an hour or more - not to mention the aggravation of trying to deal with their prodigy email account.

Does anyone have the direct telephone number to call ATT to get the reduction in fee for the Prodigy account and retain the email address? I too have called ATT and they have been clueless.
Thanks!!!!!

Do you still have the telephone number that got you to someone who knew what Prodigy was?
Thanks.

I am very sorry for any inconvenience caused by AT&T, and would like to apologize on their behalf. Here are a couple of numbers that will help. I'm sure that we will be able to address all of your questions and concerns.

I too have gone thru h... and back for the last FOUR HOURS on the phone, calling 20 different numbers, getting sent to different people. Have had to give out my email address (spelled out, it's a long one) & CC# way too many times along the way... one of the first calls asked for the information, but didn't even have my account pulled up yet. When I called him on it, he said he typed it into his 'notepad' in case of a system problem? Excuse me, but that is highly illegal!
3+ hours later, after finally reaching someone they took my updated CC# (had expired) and updated my account. She said it should be back up within half an hour.
During that time, I continued searching the web for this issue, and the original login error message/code I was getting. I finally came across this post. 45 minutes after it was supposedly resolved, I decided I would try the number you (1happyfamily) just posted here, since it still was not accessible.
Now, I'm told to allow 24 hours for it to be resolved? I bet, since 24 hours from now it will be Satruday, and it still won't be accessible, I'm going to have to wait until Monday - and then hope that I will have to fight on the phone again while... at work. Then, I'm probably going to have some fraudulent charges to my CC and have to deal with the costs involved in replacing the card as well.
Coincidentally, I also have a separate wireless account (since 2002 - technically since 1999 when I'd gotten the first phone thru SunCom/subsidiary of AT&T) ... After the headaches with this, and lack of concern for long-time customers... I will probably be spending the last few months of my current contract researching plans with other providers...
Thanks for caring.

Well, it's FINALLY resolved... only a month and a half later...
The person I spoke with this evening actually said that there was no reason that it should have taken 24 hours to 'reset' or 'resolve' the account. In fact, just like in the past, I was able to log in while still on the phone with this rep.
AT&T - this does not look good on you. If you didn't want to manage all of us 'old users' - why buy the services/accounts in the first place?
Thanks to all that may have read my plea, and even empathized a little... I hope that # helps you - assuming that you need it, if you're checking out this thread!

OK. I have just finished talking for ~40 minutes to 4 different representatives based on info provided by 1happyfamily intending to close my ATT account but keep my prodigy.net email address. For several years I have had high speed cable internet+phone+TV provided by another provider. My perception was that I was paying the monthly premium $14.95 for a period and then up to $15.95 for the use of the prodigy.net email address. I was told that this charge was for dialup/DSL service(which I wasn't using) & email address up til Nov. 1, 2012. There was no breakout charges for just email. Thereafter the email address was free. My question is this: Are the previous three statements FACT? From some of the posts in 2012 it seems there may be some discrepancy. However, I was able to recover about $50 from AT & T for the 3 months they charged my CC.
My takeaways from this are: I can keep the prodigy.net email address for as long as I want--FREE.
I can continue to use my Yahoo home page for FREE.
No more charges on my CC for AT&T service.

Thanks for sharing your information. Now that it has been several days since you canceled your dial-up, is your prodigy.net email address still working? 'I'm hesitant to try it myself unless I know for sure that it is failsafe.
Thanks,
DLG

Apparent SUCCESS with canceling ATT dialup while keeping FREE @prodigy.net email addesss with SMS service.
1/28/13 dialed ***** (see above -2 post) and got rep that knew about @prodigy.net email accounts - After 20+yrs Shocking!
I explained wanting to keep address but cancel dialup -> reply = no problem
In <5min dial up canceled at end of current bill cycle, email will continue indefinitely as is under ATT Free email account
Rep provided web site for more info on Free email service (www.support.att.com/freememberid)
Went there and all looks like it should work out fine.
Need to give it a few weeks to see if it really does work OK
Rep explained free email is provided by ATT through partnership with Yahoo so still a little complicated knowing where to go for what, but that has been the case for decades BUT I should get to keep @prodigy.net email for FREE. Way better that $20/mo! Good Luck to all those that follow.

I would like to offer a HUGE thanks to ShadowPryncess, tashidad06, and mawinter for providing (and confirming) the best phone number (***) to contact AT&T billing support about old prodigy accounts. It took about 5 minutes after calling that number to cancel my 20 year old-dialup service, but retain my prodigy.net email address.
I would make the following suggestion. Before canceling, your dial-up, you should update (confirm) your online account security questions. After cancelation, you will need to use those to access your email settings at att.com if your password stops working for any reason. Live tech support will no longer be an option. You can set those security questions from att.com, login to your acccount, select "Profile", "Edit Security Information". In my case, I do not think I had ever set them after the prodigy service was purchased by SBC/AT&T more than a decade ago.
It is great - no more need for a dial-up account that I never use anymore, but I can keep the prodigy.net email address I have used since 1992 or 1993!
