10 MBps Elite Speed

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that AT&T was boosting the Elite speed of internet up from 6.0 to 10.0 MBps?  Is this not happening until pair bonding and/or custom services occurs later this summer?

Yeah as far as I know, they just said it would be in 2008 sometime.

From listening to him talking about it, it sounded like there will be a fourth tier, but he never actually said how they would implement it.

I guess my interpretation of it was that the Elite speed would be boosted from 6 to 10 but anything is possible.  Maybe it is a fourth tier?  It would be smarter for them to have a low, medium, high option ... too many options and people just get confused.  It should be 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0 for the 3 choices.

Sorry for the stupid question, but do you think that there will be a price increase for the jump from 6 to 10?? I currently have the Elite package.

I wouldn't see it going up more than $5 like the jump from express to pro, but this is only guessing. I would say it probably will depend on whether they make 10mb a new tier or whether they raise the 6mb to 10.

I suspect that they'd eliminate the 1.5/1Mbps tier (or 3Mbps tier)
and offer the following:
1.  Basic 1.5/1Mbps tier for $25

2.  Pro 6/1Mbps tier for $40 (or 45)
3.  Elite 10/1Mbps tier for $50 (or 55)

This will align it closer to what cable is offering.

I don't think they'd get rid of the lowest tier if they intend to do a price raise. People with the lowest internet package wouldn't be happy with being FORCED to take the jump to the next tier and paying more. So it won't be done

I kinda got forced a few years ago to go up to Pro because they said it would be needed for Project Lightspeed (when it was still a secret).  Now I see that's a lie because you can have Express.  And they gave me a new bundle deal.

I have Express and I certainly wouldn't be happy at all. It suits my purposes just fine.

Project Lightspeed was the project that was insanely long in planning that we now call Uverse (the name gives it away...since fiber transfers using light....light...speed)

I'm always rooting for the underdog I'd love them to prove everyone wrong who said FiOS will blow U-Verse out of the competition. I call it as i see it, and I see how much potential U-Verse has.

U-verse will be a better technology then Fios, and it is the future of television, but it grossly lags in speed (which limits HD streams #'s, internet speeds, etc) right now.  But as with any technology, I will put up with it's growing pains ... within reason.  U-verse WILL need to eventually need to do fiber to the home/prem to compete with FIOS and cable for speed.  VDSL/2 will never match fiber's bandwidth and speed.

Most of FiOS' increased bandwidth is currently wasted, from what I've read.

Some of the best technological advances in the world have come from being constricted. AT&T has delivered with these restrictions in place before. Invented the telephone, brought sound to movies, had a big hand in RADAR technology, responsible in large part for cellular communications (AMPS, etc), invented the vaccum tube. Everything came from a necessity, when AT&T was constrained.

Agreed though that eventually they'll need to try something new. Who knows? COAX has come a long way, and transmission speeds are improving quite well. There are too many ongoing researches, and hopefully some of them will improve speeds beyond what this system would require.

The speeds back then were the same for Express and Pro...Elite was added much later.  Yes, Lightspeed is UV.

They mentioned the higher speed would be for getting TV over the phonelines.  This was around about 4 years ago...

Forgive me loa2008, but do you have inside information about this for sure? I mean I hope that is the case and those with Express aren't forced upwards, but we have been told other things that haven't come about either, so that is why I asked what I did.

Nah, I wish.  I got that from the guy building my new pc for me! i'm not a uverse customer yet- but cant wait til it gets here!  Can someone explain cat5 to me?  I was wondering if I needed to have that installed ahead of time

They're not boosting Elite speed, they're adding another tier completely.  Max maybe?    I don't think it'll take till summer to implement either..
