A competing sat company is offering 4000 on demand movies for free in their latest TV ads. Will U-Verse compete with a similar offer soon?

We do not know. This is a peer to peer (customer to customer) forum. Is having a library of 4000 movies worth a 24 month contract with ETF's?
I will say from experience, that VOD is not a U-Verse strong-point compared to Comcast but is better than some others and way better than a few. I switched from Comcast in 10/2008 and have not missed the VOD, one bit.
Now there is U-Verse Online which is an online portal to shows that you can watch online and seems to have hundreds if not thousands of movies. http://uverseonline.att.net/home You could, if you have a laptop with HDMI out and a TV with HDMI in, watch these on a TV.
There is not one perfect service. If so, we would all be there. Changing TV providers requires research and unfortunately some trade offs.

Is something similarly available for Showtime or the other channels?

Showtime required proving what provider I was using to sign up, Starz didn't.

Flippin' awesome! Thanks! Now one more question, this time about HBO. How do your prove that you have U-450?

I don't remember, I know I signed up as soon as it was avaiable. I've only watched anything online a couple of times.
Starz and Showtime aren't nearly as inclusive as either HBO or Max.

How do you watch movies on Showtime? I was able to watch an episode of one of their series but I didn't see how to watch a movie.

We have watched a couple of shows from Internet sites. HDMI between the PC and the TV. Worked OK but if we made a habit of it we would have to jump our Internet speed up a couple of notches.....at least. Motion was fairly jerky.

I signed up for vod on the Showtime site, and I thought I would be able to watch movies like people can do on HBO. I was able to watch their series but only saw previews of their movies. I was wondering if anyone signed up to Showtime who is a subscriber, and was able to watch a vod movie on their site?
I hope that question was clear.

I've actually meant to try this out when I'm at home, but I've been too busy. I subscribe to U-300 (at the moment) so I should be able to see.

Full movies are not available on the Showtime website. There are some clips and a few episodes of some series, but no full movies. The site is not similar to HBO GO or Max Go. It is simply the official website of Showtime.

There is always Netflix with 6,000+ movies plus more and more TV. For $8 a month you have unlimited streaming of movies and TV, and you have your selected programs in a queue for easy access. Of course you need a device to interface with the providers, like a Blu-ray player with streaming (but NOT Sony, which runs all your streams through its own servers, slowing it down and causing myriad network problems) or a box like the Roku or Apple TV interfaces. And many new TV's have internet apps built in. My Vizio TV is one of them...and these plus coming sets with full-blown web browsers are the future.
With AT&T set top boxes, you may not even need a WIFI connection, since the STB serves as a network hub where you can plug in your Ethernet cable. That means even a lower-end Roku box can work. Once you have the setup, you can have all kinds of Internet video available. For another $8 a month, there is Hulu Plus.
My point is that there are considerable low cost video on demand providers that make that function per se not the deal maker/breaker it might have been.
