Hello guys, my first post on the forums in hopes of getting some help ![]()
So I am using the TV & Internet Combo from Uverse and I beleive the internet speed is the $20 one but I would have to check on that. I recently installed the service about a week ago. They came in checked the wires and replaced them, installed the huge silver router behind the TV and I was good to go.
Right off the bat I noticed that my bars on the lower right of the screen were like at 2-3 which indicated low speed (Windows 7 BTW) Sometimes I can barely stream youtube videos, and some of my games are really lagging.
In WoW, I am getting like 1k Latency, I confirm this is not the game issue because I connected to another wireless network in the house and it is running a steady 150 MS latency. While this one frequently shoots up to like 1k-5k.
And another problem, the Gateway 2wire router setup website is not working for me.
Don't hesitate to ask me if I need to post any additional info.
THANKS

Please download U-Verse Realtime, install it, and post screenshots of the IP/Profile tab, Bitloading tab, and Coax/HPNA tab.
This may let us see if you're having line problems that would cause these issues.
To post pictures in the forum, you will need to upload the screenshots to a photo sharing site such as Photobucket, Picasa, Google, etc.

Probably not the best place for the router as far a wireless reception goes IMO.
Right off the bat I noticed that my bars on the lower right of the screen were like at 2-3 which indicated low speed (Windows 7 BTW) Sometimes I can barely stream youtube videos, and some of my games are really lagging.
Those normally indicate signal strength or integrity, not speed.
In WoW, I am getting like 1k Latency, I confirm this is not the game issue because I connected to another wireless network in the house and it is running a steady 150 MS latency. While this one frequently shoots up to like 1k-5k.
If it's another "G" wireless router, it could be causing conflicts with the Uverse router (a lot of channel switching going on maybe).
And another problem, the Gateway 2wire router setup website is not working for me.
Don't hesitate to ask me if I need to post any additional info.
THANKS
I would start with moving the Uverse router to a higher location away from the TV.

I installed Uverse Realtime but when I open it, it says the program is not responding.
While I was installing Realtime another program tried to install called WinCap, I canceled thinking it wasnt part of it, was it?

Yes, WinPCap needs to be installed for UVRT to work.
WinPCap is a network packet capture library, there is no malware included. It will not interfere with anything else on your system.
Re-Run the installer and complete the WinPCap installation.

Also, have you tried gaming with the computer hardwired to the Uverse router (ethernet cable)?

I cannot hardwire the router since it is in another room in the house.

Just go to an electronics store (Best Buy, Office Depot, Radio Shack) and buy a 100 foot cable to test it with.
Or buy shorter cables and move the router because it looks more like a wireless issue, not a Uverse connection issue.

Well just found out I had a 100 ft cable in a cabinet just lying there, plugged it in and got the SAME results.
Waiting for the other Joe to read the results ATT Realtime gave me.

What is the "other wireless network" connected to?

Well the other wireless network was not Uverse it was just the At&T "Fast DSL" which it was truly fast. Ran games with 50-100 MS latency.
Now, that router belonged to a person that lived in another part of the house, since he is moving out tommorrow I used that connection to test if this Uverse one was slow.
We used his service until he told us he was moving out so we ordered our own Uverse service.

There is some minor interference on your DSL line, but nothing that should cause these Internet symptoms.
Are you running any Bittorrent or other peer-to-peer sharing apps? Turn these off and test again if you are. The 2Wire will have problems if an application like Bittorret is saturating the upstream bandwidth.
Continue to do tests with wired Ethernet instead of wireless so that we can eliminate that variable for the time being.

There are no torrents running in the background.
I tested a few more times (2-3) the ethernet did nothing.

Can you go to www.speedtest.net and do several of the speed tests available there? Test from 3-5 servers that are near your location. Post the best results you get here.
This will let us see a representation of your internet speed and latency.
When you complete a test, click the "Copy Direct Link" button, and use the image insertion function to put the image into your post, which will show up like this:

Miami Server:

Fort Myers:

Finally, Tampa:

Let me add that in WoW I was able to play about 2 hours with a steady 100-150 MS Latency till the problems began again and it shot up to 600 MS for about 15 minutes, then disconnected from the server.

k, so apparently the problem is intermittent.
That middle set of stats from Fort Myers, FL actually looks somehwat decent (5.16 Mbps down, 1.46 Mbps up, and 78 msec latency). The other two don't look so good.
I think it's probably time for you to contact David & Matt's team and let them take a look at your setup.
Click the "AT&T Links" tab in my signature below, and then click the "AT&T Social Media Support Team" link. Follow the instructions to e-mail David and he'll get back to you.

I will relate my issues with Uverse internet. Though speedtest has been showing good at around 6Mbps (elite package), my internet browsing has been glacially slow and borderline unusable.
I did all the tests on the uverse site. Common sense stuff. Virus scan, modem reboot, history/cache clean. etc. No use. I tried switching to Firefox from IE. No go. Still slow. Ping test were intermittent, with 25% failure rate in some cases. Both desktop (wired) and laptop (wireless) showed the same issues.
The technician came out today. He replaced the router. Checked the lines. Even put new clips on the lines, outside and in. Still slow.
I have a 2 wire router.
The problem ended up being the 'pluglink' wall outlet connections. One outgoing pluglink from the router and into a wall socket. One into my desktop ethernet connection in the other room. Once the pluglink was unplugged from the router, it's as if someone injected Nitrous into both of my computers, via wireless. (The tech. gave me a usb wireless antennae for my desktop) Though speedtest still showed around 6Mbps, browsing and other applications now match that. Obviously the pluglink was causing some sort of spurious voltage, and or signal propogation back in to the router and causing interference.
I guess from here I will either stick with wireless or run a CAT5 to the router up through the attic to the router.

Ok guys, I ran into the same problem. I have the 12.00mbps (but also works with the 6mbps) and my wireless speeds were really slow
First understanding speed
12mbps = 1.5 megabytes per second
6mbps = .75 megabytes per second
3mbps = .375 megabytes per second
What is not the problem
1. The att residential gateway, basically the book looking box is not a problem. Its the wireless component built in to the book looking box that is the problem. The internet speed is good if you connect it with an ethernet cable (non-wireless). But its the wireless router built in that is limited. Below I explain.
The Problem
- If you are getting internet through the Att wireless router this is your problem
- The att wireless router is set to a max of 5.60mbps, (and remember, no wireless router every consistently performs at its max)
- That means that the max wireless speed for the att router is .7megabytes per second (but remember wireless routers will never run on max. (sometime the router is so bad is only send wireless information at .047 megabytes per second)
- This makes the att wireless router send wireless information at a slower speed
- The only way to get the speed that you paid for is to connect your computer to an ethernet cable. (non-wireless)
- Directly connecting the ethernet cable always gives the true speed of your internet connection and will always perform at its max speed, but wireless won't because of obvious interference and the limitations of the att wireless router.
How to Solve the slow wireless
- Simply buy a wireless router with 300mpbs capability (all of these routers are compatible with your pc since they are top notch) amazon.com or newegg.com
- Connect your wireless router with the att one
- make sure your wireless pc connects to your 300mbps router (remember, it wont actually connect wirelessly at 300mbps, but it sure will get close and definitely kick the att wireless routers butt.
- solved, you should be getting a nice 1mg to 2megabytes per second
Why would this solution work
- okay so we have identified that the wireless portion of the att router works at limited rate at 56mbps.
- we have also learned that the att router connected directly to your pc with an ethernet cable works without any limitation on internet speed
- well, what we are doing is getting a new wireless router( with 300mbps limitation) and connecting it directly to the att router with the ethernet cable (making sure that the new wireless router gets that max information)
**I can't break it down any easier than that. I hope this helps.

I have U-verse Max internet (12/1.5), and I use the 2Wire 3801HGV for my wireless connection. On my laptop, I consistently test around 11.7 down and 1.5 up on a wireless connection.

I don't have any technical knowledge about this stuff, but I have the 18/1.5 internet package from Uverse and while on SpeedTest.net, I typically get decent results....13 - 17 down and 1.4x up....I don't feel I'm getting near this speed in actual use. For instance, some applications such as when downloading a program update, etc they give you the speed you're experiencing and almost never do I get speeds that equal the test rates. Recently I was downloading a large file and it was running at about 390 Kb/s, which is roughly 3Mbps I believe and I should be more like 1.7 MBps speed wise. Also, when watching a video on youTube or other online source, sometimes they will run without freezing and sometimes it freezes terribly. I don't think I'm actually getting the speeds in real life that the test programs show.
Here's a test from SpeedTest that I just ran: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1804941097.png

morfinf1, does this method work on a Mac also? So you just buy one of these routers, connect it to the RG using eternet cable and run your computers off of that router? How do you make sure you run off that router and not off the 2 wire from AT&T....just by making sure which one you're connected to ...anyway to shut off the wireless from the 2wire to keep down interference?
Thanks

A lot of it depends on what is on the site you are connecting to. YouTube has known issues and it's not just for UVerse customers. Rarely will you get the same speeds on a real site that you get from speed test sites.

That's what worries me...I wouldn't be worried if on real sites the speed was a little less, but if it's grossly different it bothers me. But maybe what I'm experiencing is primarily because of the wireless router built into the RG as mentioned above? But I see some inconsistencies too. Last night I tried something to see if wired vs wireless gave me much different results. Normally I'm on a Mac upstairs...that's where I get my everyday experience, but for the test I needed to use a laptop.
Tests performed on 2/29/12 using my ASUS laptop. First the laptop was connected directly to the AT&T RG using an ethernet cable, then wirelessly using the wireless router in the RG....from about 5 feet away from the RG. I used SpeedTest.net for these results.

I am in southeast Louisiana, have the 18 mbps package, and the most speed I've seen using speedtest.net (and other similar services) is right under 13 mbps download, testing to Houston or Atlanta, which are presumably the closest test servers. I'm thinking about downgrading to the 12 mbps package to see if it stays the same.
