If the RG requires a crossover something is wrong and it should be replaced.
To check DHCP:
XP:
1.Start/Control Panel - double click Network Connections
2.Right click on the wired connection and choose properties.
3.Choose TCP/IP and click Properties.
4.Make sure both radial buttons are set on "Obtain...automatically"
Vista:
Start/Control Panel - double click Network and Sharing Center
On the left, click Manage Network Connections and follow steps 2-4.
