I am an ATT retiree, not yet a uverse subscriber. While I'd like to be, I don't want to get it and find I have technical issues like so many I've read about. So I'm trying to research just what I might expect, based on my location and distance from the VRAD, etc. The VRAD is located probably less than 1/2 mile from my house, but that's all I really know. My understanding is that not only do I need to know what the cable distance is from the VRAD to my house, I also need to know whether I'm on copper or pair gain, what size cable is going to my house and a few other little things (bridge taps, etc.) I'm also aware of the new pair bonding technology, which is supposed to extend the reasonable distance to somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. My question here is: How can I get this information?

Put your address in the availability checker and first see if you're green for Uverse.
http://www.att.com/u-verse/availability/index.jsp?
If green, call ATT and order, they should be able to tell you the approximate distance you are from the VRAD. Bridge taps, etc. will only be apparent after you get installed and can see your bitloading chart w/SomeJoe's Uverse realtime.exe.

If you happen to know an 'insider', might try them. Good luck ![]()

You won't get an appoximate distance from the VRAD until the tech comes out to do your install.

I live 2 miles from the VRAD and I'm loving all the service and clarity. No complaints.

You live 2 miles (10,560 feet) from the VRAD that services you?

1.6 miles from the VRAD would be 8,448 feet. Service at the distance would seem unlikely.

I even remember when the tech left and told me where he was going to start service (vrad). I drive by it going to work all the time. I'll measure tomorrow. No less than 1.5 miles though.

If that is the case then you are the only Uverse sub with service that far away from a VRAD....
not.

Why don't you load SomeJoe's tool and get an estimate of how far you are from the VRAD? The new pair bonding that is being implemented in some markets might extend service out to about 5,000 feet (i.e. less than 1 mile).

Lucky me then I guess.
Smart **bleep** aside, perhaps my version of the vrad is different. Mine is housed in very small building (50 sq. ft.) w/ forced and cooled air. Maybe there is a box closer, but I've seen nada and again, the tech. told me the location and again, I see it everyday.

What you are describing does not sound like a VRAD.

My VRAD is housed in a SLK hut along with other telco equipment. I have seen it many times. I am a retired ATT tech.

Thanks for the info, Chris; wish I knew an insider around here, but when I worked for the Company it wasn't anywhere near here, and too long ago as well!! But it is available here, has been for several months, so I guess I may as well give it a try! I appreciate the tip about the realtime program.

O.k. measured today. It's 1.1 miles exactly. Sorry about the inaccuracies. If that's not the VRAD the only other box is slim (1 1/2 feet high by 10" wide by 10" deep) in the neighbors yard housed next to the cable company boxes. Nothing else is near by.

Have you seen any boxes that look like this in your neighborhood?

I have not but I do believe from the brief glimpse I got when the tech was working it is the unit to which I'm referring (housed inside small building). Perhaps I'm wrong, but I will look into it.
Thanks for your time.
