Hello all...
I was a Dish customer for YEARS but, like many of you I'm sure, you read the mailings and brochures for the new AT&T U-Verse service and were quite impressed at what the service offered. I actually switched ALL of my service (TV, phone and internet) at a little bit of savings each month for the 3 services.
BEFORE going ahead with the install I had VERY SPECIFIC question/concerns about the functions and features of the the TV service, specifically, the DVR functions. Perhaps like me, you too became FAMILIAR and COMFY with certain features...features which you would EXPECT to continue with an "upgrade" in a service. Well, it was very very very difficult to find out the specific information I was looking for. The sales reps had GENERAL information to provide but were unable, for the most part, to provide answers to my specific questions. I was told to go to the AT&T/UVerse website which was "filled with information." The problem was that navigation of FAQs and other "informational sections" of the website was, to me, a VERY twisted and confusing web of still GENERALIZED answers and NO specific answers to what I was searching for. Any guides of info or PDFs were "Quick Setup" or general guides...NOTHING specific. I checked online for a PDF of the DVR instruction manual...and even asked the reps on the phone if one was available. NOTHING could be found on the web and what did the reps say: that I had to be a UVERSE SUBSCRIBER to get a copy of a manual mailed to me!! Well, if I WERE already a subscriber, I would HAVE THE INFO ALREADY, right!!?!?
Anyway, the service as it is running in our house is VERY SMOOTH. The features that it offers, it performs well. I am **NOT** complaining about the general operation of the UVerse TV.
What I **AM** complaining about are a BIG LIST of features which AT LEAST my previous Dish service had for YEARS...and perhaps MANY OTHER DVR TV companies had with their DVR services...which are **TOTALLY MISSING** from UVerse!!! I am NOT talking about some space-aged functionality but some VERY simple, intuitive and NOT-SO-NEW functions that are MISSING!! I don't know about YOU GUYS but I sorta, kinda ASSumed that MOST or AT LEAST **SOME** of these OLDER industry-wide features would be AVAILABLE. But, to my GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT, they are not!!!! :-(((
Well, I have spoken to reps who have nodded on the phone in agreement, understanding my frustration and promising to "pass along" the suggestions. But I thought it would be good to be **HEARD HERE** and give AT&T a **BIG LIST** of features that are MISSING but SHOULD NOT BE MISSING from UVerse!! This service is touted as such an "advancement in DVR technology" with its advanced internet integration and home networking functionality....
Well, let's LIST these missing functions that should IMMEDIATELY BE IMPLEMENTED!!!! Again these aren't 2025 technology suggestions...these functions have been around for a LONG TIME...but apparently NOT WITH UVerse!!! WHAT A SHAME AT&T!!!! LET'S BE HEARD!!!
My NEXT post will start the list....COME ON EVERYBODY, ADD YOUR MISSING FUNCTIONS TO THE LIST AND BE HEARD!!!!!!

Well, after my intro in the previous post, here is my BIG list (in no particular order) of various features which I are MISSING from AT&T UVERSE but are available with OTHER SERVICES!!! COME ON....LET'S GET HEARD!!!
1. You CANNOT SEARCH DESCRIPTIONS on shows (only titles, names). So if you want to search for a subject such as "polar bears" or "honda" cars or "trout" UNLESS that search term is found in the title or listed as an actor, you will NOT FIND THE SHOW!! **HOW IS IT THAT YOU CANNOT SEARCH DESCRIPTIONS!!!?!?** (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
2. Recorded shows are grouped ONLY if recorded as "Series"...even if the SAME NAME and SAME SHOW on the SAME CHANNEL SAME TIME SAME DAY OF THE WEEK!!! Why do we have to scroll through PAGES of the same named shows?? PUT THEM IN FOLDERS PLEASE!! (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
3. You have to set up blocked/unblocked/fav channels for EACH RECEIVER. WHAT A PAIN!!! You should have a "universal" option to make ONE list viewable to ALL receivers in your home. Now I have create the SAME block/unblock list for EVERY RECEIVER in my house?? I thought this was a NETWORK THROUGH my ENTIRE HOUSE integrating ALL my TVS!?!?!? (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
4. You should have a SIMPLE "see ALL channels" or "see all SUBSCRIBED" options with MULTIPLE favorite lists and the ability to NAME those lists. Why to I want to SEARCH for a title or subject and then find that I CANNOT view or record because I do NOT subscribe to the channel??? (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
5. There is NO HISTORY for the search fucntion. Have to retype same thing each time your search. If I search for "college volleyball" and find no listings and then want to search for the SAME SEARCH SUBJECT in a few days, I have to type it again!!?!? (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
6. You cannot "skip forward," e.g., 5 hours or 8 hours, on the guide (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
7. There is NO SLOW MOTION/SINGLE FRAME ADVANCE option (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
8. You CANNOT SCROLL Z to A or backward A to Z on lists of DVR items. List STOPS at A or STOPS at Z (no loop to continue back to the top after the end; or backward from the top to the end) (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
Anything else people.....?????

Yep, that's a big list. However, this is a peer-to-peer forum, not run by ATT employees. I don't think they'll hear you. As to your list;
1. I couldn't search by description with TWC (maybe I had an older box). Titles only.
2. TWC doesn't have folders for grouping shows (done in list form by date only)
3. I had to block channels on each individual receiver with TWC.
4. TWC had no way of choosing "see only subscribed channels". Several times 2001 was on the RetroPlex channel and I'd go to watch it and I'd get a big blank screen stating I do not subscribe to this channel.
5. I didn't perform a whole bunch of searches in my guide, so I can't really compare this.
6. The only way I could see future times on TWC was to push the right arrow button one hour at a time.
7. TWC did have slow motion.
8. I believe my DVR from TWC also stopped at the end of the list.
Sounds like you were happier with Dish than you are with U-Verse. U-Verse is a new technology. There are features I'd like to see (some are in your post) but are they deal breakers for me? No. There are things U-Verse has which blows TWC out of the water. I'm sure new features will be rolled out in time. I'd rather they take their time and get it right, than rush through a bunch of new feature updates and crash my system because of bugs. The good thing with U-Verse is there is no contract, so you can walk away anytime. I hope you can take the time and enjoy the service!
Good Luck!

When you're viewing the Guiide, hit the "Aspect" button (bottom right side on remote). It gives you many choices there including jumping ahead up to 2 weeks
(BOO-YA!)

Scudder,
You have some legitimate points. If you were used to those features, and those features are important to you for your TV viewing, then U-Verse may not meet your needs.
Some of those features you listed I'm sure will eventually make it into the U-Verse software. Unfortunately, I cannot say if or when, as only AT&T knows.
One other consideration is that the Tivo corporation actually has some patents on some DVR features. Tivo and Dish are currently entangled in a lawsuit over some of those features. I do not know if any of the features you listed are included in the claimed patent infringement by Tivo, but if they are, it could be that AT&T is playing conservative, and is intentionally not implementing those features until the lawsuit is settled. This way, AT&T keeps itself out of trouble until the courts give more concrete guidance on what DVR features are not covered by Tivo's patents.
The only advice I can give you is to weigh the features of the U-Verse service that are more advanced that what you were getting with Dish network (the THDVR features and higher selection of available HD channels, as well as probably better Internet service than what you had before, and small features like the applications and the web remote), vs. the features you are now missing. You will have to ask yourself if there are ways you can work-around the missing features, or if they are too important to your viewing habits.
One thing you may want to look at is the online program guide, as it has some search features that aren't available on the STBs. Combined with the web remote, this may allow you to search and schedule recordings similar to the way you did with Dish, although with a bit more manual effort. However, because you will be working from a computer rather than through the TV/remote, the operations may be just as fast.
If you haven't checked out the web remote, please do, as there are several DVR operations that are much easier from the web remote than from the TV, especially mass deletes.
I do hope you enjoy your service with U-Verse, and if you do need to switch back to Dish, keep an eye on U-Verse, as they are adding features all the time. One day you may want to try it again.

Hi Moparman...
I hear yeah...seems that YOUR experience with UVerse is a nice "upgrade" from your TWC...and that's GREAT. We all bring out own experience most recent TV functionality to the table. If I were coming from rabbit ears or a basic, basic cable with no DVR, I'd be blown away. But as I mentioned in my intro post, though the service that UVerse provides is smooth and decent qualtiy, FOR ME, however, some of the missing functions are a bit of a DOWNGRADE in service.
Your wrote: "U-Verse is a new technology."...
While the internet-based, home-network, every TV and internet allllll connected might be relatively new (and DOES work WELL with its integration), my POINT is that whether you're coming from Rabbit ears or a super high quality DVR service, I would have thought that AT&T would have done some RESEARCH and implemented these BASIC functions in their service. UVerse might be a "new" type of service...but they should NOT be expected to be lesser and "ignorant" of some functions of competitors who have been around for YEARS.
I understand that TWC might not have had those functions but Dish (and I believe Comcast's DVR service and others) ALL had functions that are missing on UVerse Like when you "upgrade" to a new phone, you ALWAYS are left without a function that you LOVED and say to yourself, "this is a SUPER DUPER NEW PHONE.....why did they get rid of THAT????" Well, I've found with UVerse that it is NOT just one function that is "missing" but MANY MANY functions.....ALL of which have been around "the industry" for a LONG time. UVerse has the descriptions of the programs but YOU CANNOT SEARCH DESCRIPTIONS??? That's like searching on google.com ONLY for the titles of the pages...WHAT IS THE PURPOSE??? If you record a "series" of a program the shows are neatly arranged in a compact folder...but if you record 20 individual episodes of "Oprah" then there is NO folder and you have to scroll and scroll through days and days or recordings or arrange by title and scroll and scroll?? It is just some SIMPLE and INTUITIVE and ESTABLISHED features that are missing....

ANOTHER great idea Shoe. ANY INTEREST in posting a comment that isn't (1) obvious or (2) might possibly be helpful?? What's with the attitude pal?? You seem QUITE interested in commenting and commenting...with ZERO interest in participating with any other.
Tell you what...you LOVE the service?? CONGRATS!!! Please email AT&T and tell them to NEVER CHANGE OR UPGRADE. Then you'll be super happy because that appears to be what you want...
Lemee ask a question....when your cell phone drops connection, do you LIKE IT?? Don't bother to call and complain?? If your credit card company charges you a fee that shouldn't appear on your bill, do you THANK them and pay for it?? If the power flickers in your house because there is a problem with the power company, do you install a disco ball and just start dancing??
And with **THIS** continued type of post my friends is why you can expect ZERO CHANGE to the UVerse service......**AMAZING** that Shoe would rather post messages telling me to QUIT the service rather than to improve what he pays $1000+ a year for. What a waste....

ALLLLLLLS I'm looking for is a bit of a collection of VOICES so that perhaps....PERISH THE THOUGHT....that that service that we ALLLLL pay for (and pay NICELY) might be improved. VERY GOOD point SomeJoe!! That is something that I hadn't considered. Though I would DOUBT that something like a text search from a program description would be proprietary or since U-Verse already uses folders for "Series" recordings that it's "conservatively not allowed" to put shows with the same title and same everything into a single folder.
SomeJoe7777 wrote:One other consideration is that the Tivo corporation actually has some patents on some DVR features. Tivo and Dish are currently entangled in a lawsuit over some of those features. I've actually done some of the online DVR recording manipulation and searching and scheduling. Now **THAT** is a very cool feature...and I like it better with the way you get a nice WIDE view of the different channels and times on your screen. However, as you said, that does require one to take the added steps to get ONLINE to do those functions rather than just having them on the TV. I **UNDERSTAND** what can be shown on the TV with the software available is MORE limited than what can be accomplished on the web these days...
And from what I remember, the search function online is the SAME LIMIITED search of title and actor keywords...which is even MORE shocking!! While the software might be limited on the DVR receiver in the house, one would THINK that you could search the description of a show online??
Some VERY GOOD points and suggestions there SomeJoe...you got a KUDOS to me and a THANKS!!! :-)))
Scott
PS....hey SHOE, take some NOTES from SomeJoe as to what a reply SHOULD be!!! LOLOL!!!

Oh, there's a 'quick fix' alright: Go back to Dish.
LOL!! Ain't so quick any more...they got my receivers!!! That 30-days trial goes QUICK (and only 15 days to return your receivers to Dish before they charge!) LOL!!
Like I said....I'm sticking with UVerse...just hoping for a little IMPROVEMENT. Can't get a THING changed if you don't **SPEAK** to someone, ya know???

Good point Chris. But woulda, coulda, shoulda....if...IF I had known about this. This Forum was the ONLY thing that wasn't recommended to me for infomation.Scott
I actually searched "Uverse" and the first two that weren't sponsored links were Utalk and
Uversusers.com, even before I signed up for Uverse online 6/29/08 I checked out both to get the
lowdown. Decided this is just what I want, especially after the Dish installer was honest and told
me that a tree was blocking the 121 satellite w/all the HD and local HD (said dishonest installers
would have just installed and let me complain about 'searching for signal').
Had just a basic Dish receiver from 2000 and bought a 42" Panasonic plasma and wanted HD and
a DVR. Personally think this DVR is pretty good (1st one obviously), w/a few drawbacks and do try
workarounds to some points of your initial list. ![]()
Edit: I can also say that posting what you did post as your 1st and 2d posts brought out the wrong
attitude from some of the other users.

8. You CANNOT SCROLL Z to A or backward A to Z on lists of DVR items. List STOPS at A or STOPS at Z (no loop to continue back to the top after the end; or backward from the top to the end) (you can WITH DISH NETWORK!!)
Having bi-directional or "wrap-around" menus is long overdue on U-Verse.

Well, as long as we're adding so many new features...=) How about a way to stop the annoying weather alerts? lol
I know AT&T is required to play them, I just don't recall them being so annoying on regular OTA tv.
I could probably do without Santa Tracker updates being splayed across the screen too, totally screwing up recordings.
Will we also get a countdown channel for the 2012 scheduled end of the world? You can't make this stuff up.
Too funny.

Thanks for getting this started. Overall, I am happy with U-verse because it has many channels and many on-demand selections, but it's lacking in some features. In addition to your list, these are what I think must be fixed/improved:
1) No picture-in-picture!!!! (I mean a PIP that I can leave on and easily toggle)
2) No clock on the cable box.
3) Few ways to turn off parental control. I used to be able to turn off parental controls for a particular show, for a particular channel, or for all channels for a designated amount of time.
4) The grid is slow to navigate and is not always responsive.
5) Show information does not give indication as to its content (sex, violence, language, etc.) other than it's MPAA rating.
6) No way to know how much space is left on the DVR.
7) No way to cancel channel input if I press the wrong number.
These are nice-to-have:
1) Browse channels by category: e.g. movies, sports, documentary, etc.
2) Easily hide all non-HD channels that have an HD version. Why do I want regular ESPN when I have ESPN HD?
3) Resume to live input with a single button press after pausing and rewinding a live broadcast.
4) Skip to beginning/end of recorded content while watching it.
Hopefully AT&T is working on these. It has good stuff, but it also has catching up to do.

I think you may have missed this one. It's as much info as you need about the amount of space remaining
6) No way to know how much space is left on the DVR.

Thanks Jimmyone...I was just going to type this for Cygnus, the OP.
Just know that the disk usage is given as a PERCENTAGE...so AT&T wants you to do a little math to convert to hours
The number of "hours" left also depends on the quality of the video...SD or HD.

Re #4 toward the top (slow grid)....I find the grid slow when I am using my Logitech Universal Remote rather than the UVerse remote that came with the unit. There seems to be an inherent delay with my Logitech remove that is NOT the "fault" of UVerse. THAT BEING SAID, however, I HAVE experienced a delay with the grid EVEN WITH the UVerse remote if the DVR unit is "really working"....i.e., if I am DVRing 4 shows at the same time.
Re #2 toward the bottom (hide all SD/HD channels)...vice versa would be nice as well, obviously, as I do NOT have HD TV. Your suggestion goes along the lines of my original post for a "one-touch" option to show "ONLY SUBSCRIBED channels" so I'm not surfing through stuff that isn't part of my U200 or U300 subscription.
Re #3 toward the bottom (ONE-BUTTON return to live TV)...YES, I forgot this one!! Dish Network had a "Live TV" button that went RIGHT TO Live TV. This is ESPECIALLY annoying with UVerse if you are watching 2, 3, 4 hour show and rewind a bunch. Your ONLY option is to FF as fast as possible back to live :-/
Good contributions Cygnus!!
Scott
