This should make a nice workaround to the current VOD issues
!!!!
One interesting thing is both HBO and Cinemax are using the same Silverlight based app.

"One interesting thing is both HBO and Cinemax are using the same Silverlight based app."
That would be interesting since HBO Go works on Google TV which doesn't have support for Silverlight. I'm going to try to log into MAX Go via Google TV tonight when I get home and see what happens.

I'm not 100% sure it is Silverlight but the web site did have what appeared to be the Silverlight loader.
They specifically say watching on a "TV" is permissible but that would probably require a HTPC setup.

Tried MAXGO and it does not work via Google TV. Works fine over a PC though. Guess they've has created an Google TV optimized site for HBO GO but not for MAXGO.

Both HBOgo and MAXgo work on my PC but we don't have a TV or DVD player that is equipped with Internet access so if we wanted to watch I'd have to connect the HDMI cable from my laptop to the TV set. HOWEVER.....the real problem for us is that we subscribe to only the 6 mbs speed Internet service and that definitely is NOT fast enough. The motion is jerky and punctuated with brief pauses. So if we wanted to make use of it we'd have to up our speed, probably to 24 mbs.
Interestingly.....last year we watched a program on HULU and the jerkiness was not nearly as pronounced as what I'm seeing from HBO and CineMAX.

I have 18.0 mbps and it's semi-jerky at worst, passable at best. Keep in mind it may also be your computer specs.

Well they sure announced it in the "post card" I received today. Not really a postcard but full color w/photos on glossy cardstock which measures 8 1/2" x 23 1/2". Folds into 4 double sided pages.
"Go for it!
Now watch the best of HBO and Cinemax instantly online.
maxGo HBO GO
EASY, FREE and included with your current HBO and Cinemax subscriptions.
AT&T U-verse ".
I bet this mailer cost a fortune to produce and send out. Wonder who paid for it? And if this was sent to the current HBO & Cinemax subscribers wonder what those UV subscribers who do not have these channels received?
It's nice for U-verse to finally let the HBO/Max subscribers know of this new feature but you would think they could have toned it down a bit. No wonder there's a cost increase in the near future. ![]()

uni,
my wife used to be marketing director and they would send out direct mailer and such. Those aren't as expensive as you think, especially when you are sending in bulk. It might have cost $.05 per card to send. Is it over kill, yeah, but look at all the junk mail you get every week in your post office box. It probably went to you or "current resident" so it wasn't subscriber specific. Direct mail has it's merits. If even 1% sign up for the service than it's more than paid for the cost to mail it out.

OUfan, you're may be right about the mailing rates although it says "Presorted Standard U.S. Postage Paid - AT&T", nothing about bulk. Since it's 6" x 8 1/2" folded, and fairly heavy, would bet it costs more than a nickel to mail out even if using a bulk rate.
It was "subscriber specific" with my name and address on it. This particular mailer was sent only to U-verse customers who already subscribe to HBO and/or Cinemax.
Was looking more at the production costs. I used to provide input on brochures/fliers where I used to work and once you got into printing glossy card stock color brochures/mailers w/photos the prices skyrocketed.
I'm still trying to figure out what U-verse has to gain in subscribers using these "HBO/Cinemax Go" online services? It's nice of them to offer this online feature but there must be something to gain in them sending out these expensive mailers.
Would have to agree with what Spd said earlier in regards to U-verse not doing a good job in announcing/promoting, or not announcing, this "Go" feature. Maybe they are now trying to make up for this error through this mailer?
Would agree it makes better reading than all the junk mail I receive. ![]()

yeah that's true, it may have been $.25 then per sub. It was probably done here in Dallas and there are several print shops that would be capable of doing that mailer and I'm sure they have a blanket contract with AT&T for X amount of mailers per year.

Any chance for a similar app / site for SHO, TMC, Starz and so on?
Speaking of marketing - I thought that I got a Christmas Card in the mail. Well it was one, from a retailer. I quickly noticed that the "handwriting" was computer generated and saw the Bulk Mail type markings.

Don't know Dave but it would be a nice feature for all the movie channels. ![]()
Disclaimer written on the bottom of mailer:
HBO GO and MAX GO are only accessible in the U.S. where an internet connection is available. ![]()

Well, if you didn't know that you would try them on your smart phone and get a message that the browser isn't supported. I was sure hoping I cold watch them on my phone, but no such luck.

I am sitting here watching an episode of the Ricky Gervais show on my Android Evo. Its streaming nearly perfectly. Using the Dolphin browser. The HBO site uses flash, so you just need a smartphone that supports Flash. That pretty rules out the iPhone. But, any fast Android smartphone running Froyo (2.2 android) will probably work.
Note I'm also using the wifi connection in my home. It's doubtful the video will be so smooth on a questionable 3G connection, but maybe...

I finally tried it on the Touch and it is a no-go because of stupid Flashless-Safari!
So, Wireless' showcase iPhone cannot use these features?!
Maybe that's why it didn't make the Announcements?

Bummer Spd.
So I guess all users can do is stream dirty {inappropriate, wash member's mouth out w/soap} movies from MAXHD to your AT&T iPhone. ![]()
