How can I keep e-mails from going directly into the trash folder?

The explanation given under "HELP" was no help as it wasn't clear. does anyone know to easily fix it so my e-mails don't go directly into the trash folder?

AuntNina - I looked at the mail options to see if there was something I could suggest. I did not find anything. So, I will say what I have said in response to other att/yahoo problems -

Open a gmail account. From gmail downlaod all your stuff from att. In att set it to forward mail to the gmail account. End of problems with att/yahoo.

Go into the Trash folder and mark the emails and click Not Spam, it should now learn it is not spam.
