I'm challenging all telecoms. Companies. That provide cable, to lower rates, or offer customers the option to purchase their favorite channels a-la-carte! This includes, at&t, charter, time Warner, direct TV, etc....Too many duplicate channels, paid advertisement channels, and channels not offering anything at all! I have a solution! Kate-77

It is not within the ability of the TV providers to implement an a la carte pricing model. The channel owners do not distribute their channels to the TV providers on an a la carte basis. They distribute a package of channel requiring the TV provider to pay for all channels in that package. Thus, the TV providers have to offer a package of channels to it's customer in order to cover the costs of acquiring programming.

You wouldn't be able to afford to watch TV if it were ala carte. As for the paid ads, those are the networks that control those programs. Shopping channels, bring them on, they pay to be put on and help keep the costs down.

kate-77: I think that providers offering ala carte TV are getting closer to reality BUT it might not happen in my lifetime (I'm 50). There are too many power players that demand that you have all of the Discover channels, all the ESPN's and so on. There has been some movement. One provider is getting ready to offer an ESPN-less package which is nice since ESPN is very expensive but you still don't get to pick and choose. Hulu Plus and a few other net providers allow you to pick what shows that you want - that is similar.
