Local on the 8s Petition

When I ask Att sell person if when Att going to Local on the 8's local feeds weather? Instead of Listening to their Customers Requests. Att want us to use their Interactive Ubar Feature for local weather Forecasts.  If that case why not add Weather digital sub channels from local broadcasters such as in the SF/SJ bay area channels KNTV Weather Plus channel 11.2 or KGO Accuweather channel 7.3.

To protect yourself in the interim, get a new weather radio that supports SAME. The SAME system, combined with the new (as of October 1st) localized "threat based polygon" warnings being used by the National Weather Service will give you alerts for your specific area and not the entire metropolitan area where you reside.

This new system will give you better information than TWC 8's since you won't have to be married to TWC continuously to get your alerts.

I've not had the Local on the 8's for years and I'm never lacking for my local weather information.  With the flaky nature of power and TV service in severe weather, relying solely on the TV for your weather alerts is careless.

I have a weather radio now that gives NOAA reports, but I still want TWC on TV...as promised.  And again, we would have to go out and buy yet another new piece of equipment (SAME weather radio).

That's kind of like telling people they don't need to watch their sports on TV; use a radio and listen to the broadcast.   I like to see my weather, like people like to see their sports.  I know, a sensitive area...but just making a rational comparison.

Thanks.  And just curious, in heavy snow country, do you get red crawls at the bottom of Local 8's with zip codes for areas (like we do for flash flooding, tornadoes, hail, and hurricane evacs)?

Well, it never shows zip codes for us, just for the county we are in, which actually the whole county is prone to lake effect snows, so I would say other than the zips not showing, yes we do get those scrawls in red across the bottom of the screen.

If I lived in an area where severe weather meant loss of life or property, I would use the belt and suspenders approach (meaning redundancy)  to monitor what is going on.  50-100 bucks for a modern weather radio with SAME is a pittance when compared to the alternative. 

Here in Cleveland, the 4 networks all have high tech weather gear and will break into any show in the event that there's severe weather.  Their coverage is superior in many ways to a beep and crawler that the W-o-t-8's supplied when I had it on cable years ago.  They will break down the storms and show the speed, direction and any locales in the path of the storm.  This is all superior to TWC's 8's crawler. 

Don't the other large cities have the same thing?  Super mega whopper doppler on Fox or NBC?  The local TV weather wonks go simply orgasmic when they can break out the new toys and zoom in on the storms to show you what's going on.

Good luck getting Uverse to give you the 8's, but the information is already available on their service via other channels, and (IMHO)  the alterniatives are superior.

It is a great feature when you look outside and see something is coming but you aren't sure of what IT actually will be. They even have it pinpointed timewise to about how long before it hits a certain area.

You have to admit callmeox, there are times when they do go a bit overboard. Specially the winter storm *warnings* that call for maybe 3 or 4 inches of snow! Expecting a foot of snow? Now THAT is a winter storm that should have a warning. Nowadays though, there is a warning or advisory for everything.

I still want my Local on the 8's. There are times, when we would just like to see the forecast for our area and the radar map, without having to go online to do that.

I wonder if Goddard will ever retire.

Please don't get me wrong, folks.  I understand your desire to access what you want and what you're familiar with.  I'm just stating alternatives that are available in the interim (or long term) while your preference isn't there.  I hope that you get your 8's.

Yes, they do have all the fancy-schmanzy doppler-megawatt-this-and-that.  Our local Fox channel brags that theirs is the only one in the country, and it's so fantastic, they let the National Weather Center use it?  And when my current weather radio goes on-alarm, The Weather Channel always has the red crawl to correspond, whereas local channels aren't always on-time, or sometimes not at all.  I keep thinking what Bill Cosby said years ago--that The Weather Channel is Sesame Street for adults (numbers and such).

But I digress...the main point is those with cable are used to this channel (if lowly cable can do it, surely UV can), most here were promised it was available; and as trivial as it may sound, some are actually saying this is a deal-breaker.

I'm in San Antonio --- turned on the weather channel last nite and had local on the 8's.  Not the same as I was used to with Time-Warner, but it had mini-forecasts for most major markets.  I'd also like to see a complete forcast for my area on the 8's.
