What you are describing is a limitation of all VOIP telephone systems (U-verse, Vonage, MagicJack, Ooma, etc...). The easiest solution is to use a base station phone that has wireless satellite handsets. That way only the base station has to be connected to the U-verse residential gateway and you can put the wireless satellite handsets wherever you like. Do a search on Amazon for a DECT 6.0 phone. I think they start out at around 20 bucks and work their way up depending on how many wireless handsets you need.
