I have always had cable since my first installation in 1982 of Continental Cablevision. It is my understanding that for people who had satellite you could watch a baseball game, and I suppose a hockey and basketball game, without commericals.
Is it true that in between innings you would hear the feed between the broadcasters and the truck and/or conversations between the broadcasters? I suppose this ended with the advent of the Regional Sports Networks.
Can anyone give me some information about this?

Don't know where you came up w/that info, there have been commercials on sports broadcasts since they have been televised. It just continued from commercials on radio sports broadcasts before television. ![]()
Edit: The big-dish satellite feeds you are referring to would have been the actual game feed back to the station/network before being mixed w/commercials.

The game feed back to the station/network is what I am referring to. I have heard that satellite viewers were able to hear the game feed back to the station/network back in the early days.

Exactly why I added the edit about the actual feed back to the network station before the commercials were added. Sometimes there would be complete silence, other times the announcers would talk between themselves (probably when not on a bathroom break). ![]()

As said, this may have been true in the early days of satellite. In addition, I think the news feeds from NBC and other channels may have been available.
As late as 2004-2006 or so, I would watch MLS Direct Kick through their website. IIRC, they used DirecTV's feeds, as I remember turning in early and seeing DirecTV logos on the screen. Sometimes, we would get one of these "raw feeds."
Yet, at the sports bars that have DirecTV, I think we'd see commercials.

I remeber going to my uncle's house in Lakeland FL in 1988 and he had one of those massive satellites in his backyard and we were watching a football game from out of market and there were no commercials, just the annoucers talking with one another and to the feed truck.
I think when the NFL got wise and introduced the Sunday Ticket thats when commercials reappeared in the nfl feeds.

My grandparents had one of those 12 foot dishes in 84, we were watching OU vs Nebraska on ABC and when it broke for commercial break, the feed stayed on the field and we still heard the broadcasters. I can't remember which team had done what but Keith Jackson was saying during the break, can you believe that F'n play that was just run? Was quite funny actually and when the game resumed and the broadcast went live again he acted like nothing had happened. Saw the entire game with no commercials and actually got to watch the entire halftime show.

Indeed, I've watched a few recorded Indy 500's off of the bird. No commercials. Where the commercials would be they would be rewinding tape and dissecting a crash, pass or some other highlight. After the event - and after the race had ended on air, they kept the feed live for a post race update about an hour after the broadcast. Normally the shot would be from the Goodyear Blimp or a stationary camera but closer to the update time, they had s hot from the booth. It was Paul Page trying to wolf down a baloney sandwich. ![]()

Back in the early 90's, Dicky Vitale got into some trouble for calling an OSU player a "thug" or something like that during a "commercial break". But any sports bar or home owner that was watching on satellite heard every word he said.
