To make a short story long...my notebook (XP Pro) connected to the U-Verse network via the wireless connection and my desktop (also XP Pro) connected to the Gateway via Cat 5 to the NIC card, don't see each other and, therefore, I can't share the desktop's printer on my notebook.
I tried several different things before calling the technical help people. The tech suggested I d/l Homeview, a U-verse application that assist in network connections. I installed it on my desktop and it didn't see the notebook so I installed it on my notebook. I then found out that the notebook is set up with client/server software for use on the server at work and set up on a domain. Homeview tod me I needed to be set up on a workgroup so I did so. When I re-booted my notebook, I had erased the identity and coudn't even sign on...even in "safe mode". Off to the IT guy to get my notebook repaired and the domain re-set on it.
Bottom line is, I'm back in business on the domain BUT I'm still not able to figure out how to get my two machines to see each other without destroying the domain settings. Any clues?

You might not be able to see the other computer because it is in different workgroups (or in this case domain/workgroup). What you can try is to go into My Computer and type "\\IP address of other computer" without the quotes for the URL.

As Koolkid suggested do it by IP that's the best way.
I have no issues sharing off the RG/2wire. Both laptops can print to my desktop and see my desktop's hard drive.
It's not the RG/2wire causing the problem.

Have you actually ran the Windows Home Network Setup Wizard on both computers?

I actually wouldn't recommend that as that has the potential to change the domain settings again.

Ya can't blame Uverse for your employer locking down your laptop. I'd ask the resident geek there what they recommend that you do if you want to print to a shared printer at home. They know best how the machine is locked down.

One thing I have always noticed with print sharing on my setup, is that I usually have an issue with the ip addresses from the other machines and not being in the firewall configuration of the anti virus software. Weather it be Norton or AVG anti virus software I have to always include a range or the ip address of the machine to beable to go to thru the firewall of the anti virus on the machine that is the printer server. Once I do that it usually works after that.

I also have print sharing on my network. It has worked perfectly since Uverse
was installed.
