I went to the weather Channel and found this explanation for why we are not able to get weather on the 8's for our area. This is what I found:
The Weather Star is a piece of equipment located at your local cable provider that generates the local forecast and current conditions screens for your area. The Weather Channel offers this equipment to all of its distributors. To date, AT&T has not installed these devices at its locations. AT&T’s subscribers see our national signal of The Weather Channel without the Local on the 8s component that The Weather Star provides.
If you would like to see to see AT&T supply a Local on the 8s segment that is more localized for your area, contact an AT&T representative and let them know. Subscriber feedback is important to them and will certainly be considered as they make their plans.
Why would ATT- Uverse not install this divice?!!! Sorry but the interactive Accu-Weather is not the same. Please address this issue.

Money. It makes the world go 'round. AT&T wants it for free and The Weather Channel wants AT&T to pay. BUT you prolly already knew that with the once weekly posts from others on the same subject

This was one of the things that I thought I'd miss when coming to Uverse back in September 2011 from Comcast.
Haven't gone to Weather Channel on TV more than three times since that time. The Weather On Demand (227) works OK, but I've just gone to TWC online anyways to refine the info I'm getting.

Yup, on the computer, I can see my local weather including radar, without having to wait 7 minutes. And, I don't have to interupt my other TV viewing.

I actually will say that i do miss it. iBack in 2008, when I was researching to see if U-Verse would be better than Comcast, I knew that it was a missing feature. I also do not visit TWC much but would if they had LOT8's.
Note to AT&T and TWC - work out a deal to fund the device through future advertising revenues. Once the device is paid for, AT&T will be rolling in the dough - seriously.
My wife was in the hospital in November 2010, i was in a trance when the LOT8's came on. I read every page of forecasts and observations. Ditto when travelling and being in a hotel. I really miss the feature.

Can't say that even when I had a Dish, Direct or TWC I ever watched The Weather Channel. If severe weather were heading my way, local channels were a better option.

I thought this was what all of you people had iPhones for .... just touch an App and *voila*, instant weather. Lord knows nobody uses one of those as a PHONE anymore. Or are you folks too busy watching movies and TV on that little dinky screen?
Or why not just bust out your iPads while plopped on the sofa?
Smelling a bit of hypocrisy with this issue ....

Well sometimes AT&T listens to customer complaints/ suggestions, such as putting Music Choice on the channels instead of just an app / channel 500 and no data capping for TV/Net users. If it's something that i feel strongly about, I rattle AT&T's chain. It just MIGHT do some good!

If your talking about Uverse (VDSL) users not having their bandwith caps active yet, I doubt that has anything to do with customer feedback or there wouldn't be a cap on ADSL users. More than likely they found out that implementing it (splitting out the TV and phone), would cost more than they would make on overage charges or the perceived losses to online TV sources like netflix and google tv.

I am reasonably sure that the data cap implementation in telling what was data and TV was a non-issue from the start, i.e. easy to count true data. I am positive that AT&T is not always concerned with customer feedback but like every company has found, folks aren't sitting idly by, any more. Look at BoA. How many thousands of customers left, even after they backtracked on high fees? Same with Verizon. How 'bout Netflix? I used to chuckle when I heard a "one post wonder," say "lets vote with our wallet" but now AT&T (and Boa, Netflix) are coddling the customer a bit more.

If you somehow think that because of a perceived "outrage" by customers that they're not pursuing the 250GB cap, you've been smokin' something pretty strong. For all of the hoo-hah and bluster when Comcast said they were going to do the cap, there was NOTHING that occurred on a major level. There wasn't some kind of mass exodus that happened. In fact, for the speed and price, you'd end up paying MORE if you switched to DSL, even with no cap at the time.
And the vast majority of customers would NEVER get even close to 250GB in a month. Sure, if you're burning the Netflix candle and you think you're supposedly "screwing" the cable company by not doing some video service, and you go over, that's your own problem. It's not as if a situation like that hasn't been warned about all over the web.
Bank of America just had a PR problem, and it's a whole lot easier for a customer to walk into a branch, grab their cash, and walk down the road to another bank or credit union, giving them their business. With all of the trouble, and WAITING for connection of services in a cable/internet provider, most people don't want to do it.
I put up with Comcast for a good 3.5yrs beyond when Uverse first became available ---- just because I knew Uverse's limitations and technology differences, plus the pain in the behind of switching. It eventually got to the point where I did say enough. But over a usage cap? When under Comcast I only used to get to around 30% per month? Naah ... don't think so.

I wouldn't rule it out since I've seen it on an e-panel survey (ATT). When they ask about certain features in those surveys, they're fishing for consumer interest. ![]()

Still think it's a neat feature that's been bypassed by technology. Why wait for 10 minutes when you can get it online in 2?
This is something that doesn't get discussed, in regards to all of the "Why doesn't AT&T just get the equipment?" demands, for "Local On The 8s":
The IntelliStar 2 features; Animated Lower line display, Current Conditions, Weather Bulletins, Metro Conditions, Regional Doppler, Metro Doppler, Hourly Forecast, Local Forecast, and The Week Ahead. Voice narration is done by Jim Cantore.[9] Currently, the system is rolling out in a gradual process on major cable systems across the country. This unit will only be used on The Weather Channel HD and will not replace the IntelliStar or other units on the standard definition channel or on Weatherscan.
So AT&T would have to buy TWO systems at this point: The IntelliStar for the SD feed, and The IntelliStar 2 for the HD feed. Talk about redundancy, but completely predictable since it's proprietary. And just think what would happen if AT&T invested for the future, and installed The "2" version ---- the SD-only customers would be complaining more than they are NOW. Look how they've approached the sports regional networks' distribution. Nationally, they're available in HD only. In each local market, they're available in both SD and HD.
*REMEMBER*: This equipment needs to be installed at EVERY headend ("VHO" in Uverse-speak). Think of the expense that would not really be justified, in the areas where Uverse doesn't have a large footprint. AT&T could do this in areas of the Midwest or in Texas, where there are huge swaths that are pretty contiguous. It would NOT make sense for them to roll it out in say Connecticut, or in smaller areas in the South ---- there just isn't enough density/penetration to justify it. So THEN you risk even further alienation of the customer base, beyond the SD or HD implementation quandry above.
In short, if there's going to be an implementation of IntelliStar, I'd think they'd go with the HD version, because it's future-proof. Why support the SD-version when customers are complaining about wanting more and more HD?

Back before the Internet...LOT8s was all we had. Plus, we would keep that channel on while getting dressed for work, so the easiest way to get weather without being distracted by local news. ![]()
And before LOT8s, there was a phone number you could call to get the weather (free). There was no 24-hour TV back in the day. ![]()

Don't think it is ever gonna happen w/the WC, my best guess if ATT implements one, it'll be a new item that Accuweather will make up for ATT, probably for channel 227. ![]()

No, here in metro Detroit it was a specific number, think it was Michigan Bell supplying it.
Another one here in metro Detroit, there was a Michigan Bell building just N of the Davison on the Lodge Freeway. It had a big Yellow Pages display on top and it would change different colors, each color representing the weather forecast for tomorrow. There was a listing in the phone book giving the key to the different colors. ![]()

Back in the day around here, you just called the operator for the time (ya, we still had real live operators working in the local CO).
That was an easy number to remember.![]()
Or you could get out the short wave radio and tune it to the time beacons. Then tune it to the weather band for the real "Wot8's"

I agree, Accu-Weather is not the same. It's not in the same league as The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s. I relied on Local on the 8s through my previous provider, Cox, to get up-to-the-minute information on tornado and thunderstorm watches and warnings in my area. It never occurred to me that A&T& U-Verse would NOT have this feature. Please, AT&T, provide this for your subscribers!!
