I live in the Toledo, Ohio area. I used to be with Buckeye Cablevision. Since I switched to AT&T Uverse I no longer ger my Local on the 8's on the Weather Channel. I no get a national map with a national summary. Nothin' local. Why is this? When I called AT&T they didn't have an answer for me??? What's up with this?? This could be a deal breaker for me. Does anyone know whay this is?
Thanks.... Kevin

Yes because AT&T knows I'd much rather use a computer, phone, the existing weather channel, or look outside than pay extra to get Local on the 8s.

I have had U-Verse since January 2, 2008, and it has never had Local on the 8's for the Weather Channel. My understanding is that the equipment for that feature is quite costly.
There are so many positives for U-Verse that outweigh this one negative. I hope that you consider staying.

A post after mine about Local on the 8's said most folks use computers and phones to get this stuff. I understand that, but it's what I like...... I don't know........ If I knew that before hand I NEVER would have switched.

The Local on the 8s issue has been big since I got Uverse in 07. For the most part it appears that Local on the 8s will not be a part of the Uverse package. Based on what has been posted. Sorry it is a deal breaker for some people but that is how things are now.

Honestly I find Weather on Demand...on channel 227....to be much better than Local on the 8's. Not only can I check out what is happening in our area and community weatherwise but I can insert the name of any city in the U.S. and check out the weather conditions and forecast there. This is especially convenient when we are planning to travel. Why don't you give channel 227 a try before you bail out of UV?

Not to mention, what if it's 3:29 PM? Instead of waiting 9 minutes, you can go right to 227. Another option is going to google.com (or whatever search engine) and typing in "weather" followed by the city or zip code.

That is why I don't miss LOT8s. The times I needed to know the weather right before walking out the door, I had to look for another source. Especially when LOT8s just aired before I tuned the channel. I like weather on demand, when I demand knowing it.

Yes it is a big deal for me too. Not a deal breaker, though. I find the Weather on Demand feature on 227 to be as worthless as something on a boar - if you catch my drift. Some folks like it - I think that it depends on your area and how much of a weather freak that you are. The "local" radar on my 227 shows parts of 13 states and is usually 30 minutes out of date. Luckily in Indianapolis, WALV-CA (channel 50) is shown as it must be a "must carry" channel or maybe it was negotiated by the folks at WTHR (13). That channel is WTHR's "Weatherbug" channel with weather 24/7. Even if there is an infomercial running, the left hand side of the screen has radar and weather info.
Yes you can use your computer, NOAA weather radio, Weather rock and so on but I prefer a good solution on the STB and 227 ain't the one. Plus 227 has caused my box to lock up about 20 percent of the time.
If you subscribe to UVerse Internet, you can download a PC program called TVersity and use U-Verse's Media Share to stream local NOAA weather radio - a fair workaround to LOT8's.

I suppose you are ALL correct about this Local onn the 8's thing..... Maybe if I can find a real good computer local weather report with a good streaming radar I'll adapt. Any suggestions for Toledo, Ohio?
Again, sorry to be petty on this but I'm 57 and just don't adapt to change well. My wife switched vable providers to save some money.... She is probably correct. Any suggestions would be apprectated from those of you who know what you are doing on a computer.
Thanks.... Have a great Cheistmas all....... Kevin

You are welcome. Unfortunately, you have found out what others found out - switching cable providers is not as easy as switching underwear styles or coffee brands. Some research before the switch is critical.
I may have mentioned using TVersity + Mediashare to listen to NOAA weather radio on the UVerse STB. Unfortunately Toledo's NOAA station (WXL51 162.500 MHz) does not have a stream. Here is the link to the Detroit /. Southfield NOAA station that should get you a similar forecast. Sometimes Mediashare does not play all file extensions.

I agree that no Local on the 8's is a bad deal.
I agree with those that think that WOD Channel 227 is not worth a thing.
On the internet I like "weather underground". Just google that term and inter your zip. You get a good radar image that you can do various things with.
If you can pick up the sub channels to your local tv stations, some of them have a 24 hour weather feed. But usually it is a rebroad cast of a previous weather telecast. It would be nice if Uverse would pick these up and broad cast as part of their package.

Dude, my husband was in his ....ahmmmm....LATE 50s when I too switched to Uverse 3 years ago to save money. And like you, he LOVED his "Local on the 8s". He could sit for hours just watching the screen with that background music (I can hear it now....).
It took some withdrawal adjustment on his part but he eventually got over it. He occassionally watches the Weather Channel but mostly he waits for the newscast and looks out the window a lot.
So, bottom line: There is life after losing Local on the 8s. Now he watches NFL Network for hours. ![]()

Hi Kevin -- FWIW I've used a program called Weatherbug for years. It's free, runs in your tray, gets forecasts radar etc from NOAA or your local ABC affiliate. Just put in your zip and pick a weather station, you could find one as close as a mile from your house depending on where you live.
Good luck
Terry

Our local stations news broadcasts run weather and traffic every 10 minutes. I know it takes an additional 2 minutes, but I have gotten quite used to locals every 10. As Randyl would say "fwiw".

Weather on Demand is the most useless channel on U-verse---and that's saying a lot considering some of the stuff we get.
The radar screen I get covers all of Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma and bits of states surrounding them. Obviously, there isn't enough detail to be of any use at all. As I recall from the last time I really looked at WoD, current conditions are updated no more often than once an hour. Neither my wife nor I had looked at WoD for more than a year until I decided to make this post.
As far as I'm concerned, it might as well be replaced with another shopping (infomercial) channel. Our ABC affiliate has decent weather information on one of its sub-channels, but AT&T won't carry sub-channels.

Agree with you 100%. Well almost 100%. Local on the 8's and most weather services rely on the NOAA for current conditions and those are only updated hourly.
We are lucky here in Indy that WTHR (13) has a Low Power broadcast station, WALV (50) that runs the Sky Track and Weatherbug network. U-Verse carries it. They have live temperatures (real time) and local radar, 24/7 and taped forecasts although the forecasts may get outdated. It is better than WoD and would be a good compliment to LOT8's.
