We are considering a switch to ATT Uverse. Currently we have DirecTV (which my husband HATES!) and I have not been very happy with lately. Many issues with the weather. He is ready to switch back to Comcast, but to me this is a step backward, not to mention more expensive.
I am not very tech savvy, but I think my main concern from reading the posts would be bandwith. We have 4 tv's, but 3 are hardly ever used, we really only use the one with the DVR. We are replacing this tv with an HD tv very soon. We have wireless internet on 3 computers, and 1 phone line with 3 phones and a fax machine. Does anyone know if I should be concerned about bandwith? We live in CT, and Uverse has only been available here for about 6 months.
I read the posts from Swammi "need to make a decision" and this has helped me with some issues. I really need to be sure about getting into this, since it was my idea to switch to DirecTV 5 years ago.
I welcome any information and assistance I can get at this point!

You can sign up for Uverse with the tv and internet services. You get one dvr stb free and some have posted that the additional non dvr stbs are $5.00 per month. Others have said that they got 3 including the dvr for free so your results may vary. You should ask if you can get the three stbs for free and then pay $5 per month for the 4th. The internet service has a built in wireless network that you can connect all of your computers to. One would be hardwired to the rg (residential gateway), but the you can connect your other computers to the wireless network with no problem. I do computer repair and there have been times when I have had 4 computers, 1 hard wired and three wireless. All of the stbs are hd capable so when you buy your flat screen tv you can subscribe to the hd service for an additional $10 per month. And the best thing is, when it rains or snows hard you can still watch tv. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

I just got the U-verse August 2, 2008. Though I'm having pixelation/freezing problems with my two HD digital TVs, I've had almost zero problems with the computer stuff. (AT&T is working hard on the pixelation problems and we almost have that solved I think, but this isn't the thread for that.)
I have two digital HD TVs, two standard TVs, two hardwired computers. and one wireless network printer. In the evenings the two digital HD TVs and the two computers are often used a LOT and all at the same time, and we aren't having any computer issues. (Computer types like to call problems "issues." LOL Particularly if they work for the company having them. <heehee>)
My internet speeds don't seem to be affected at all by the number or types of TVs that are on, nor by these pixelation "issues". (I love to say "issues." )
FYI, I'm getting ~9400 Kbps download and ~1450 Kbps upload at speedtest.net. We tried to both click on starting the speed test at the same time on both computers the other night. The computer only going through 5' of Cat 5 cable to the RG (Residential Gateway -- like a modem/router/hub) tested at 3206/1423 Kbps, while the computer going through 50' of Cat 5 cable had speeds of 8087/1446. Go figure. Maybe one of us clicked the mouse to start the test slightly in front fo the other and the order makes a difference. Both computers have Duo Core 3 Ghz processors. One has 3 Gb of RAM, and the other has 4 Gb. So, I don't think differences in the computers had much to do with the different readings. Actually, I don't think computer speeds, or using different computers, would be, or should be, much of an issue with internet speed tests, unless some setting in the Windows Registry were set wrongly on one of them or something. I'm using speedtest.net to test.
OTOH, I've heard that someone on a wireless LAN will have lower speeds on internet speed tests than those of hard wired folks... due to the limitations of wireless. I'm no expert, so I expect that is true, but don't know it is. So, since you are wireless, I don't think the bandwidth will have any problem keeping up with your LAN situation.
Just my 2¢ worth.
If you think this info was helpful, give me a kudo! LOL

I personally would go with Uverse -
You'll have a few problems in the beginning - most being self induced
Uverse Tech Support is very helpful if you encounter a problem
I had comcast - they thought they had the market to themselve - ( in and around Chicago they do ) - so they went into the gottch mode
Went to Dish ( with AT&T) - weather was a pain -
first kid on the block to change to Uverse - In March - been happy with it -
Had a couple of problems nothing major but they have been solved - Happy with the service
I have 4 tv's and the wireless net
Just waiting for their voice to be available

Fixed!!! 7th visit by a Tech since installation on August 2, was a charm. LOL
Today I had a Tech our here from 8:30am to 4:30pm, 2 supervisors were here from about noon till 4pm, and an AT&T I&M guy (they are now I&M's -- installation and maintenance, instead of I&R -- installation and repair), who checks the lines out from the house to the VRAD, from about 9:30am to noon.
EVERYTHING is working supper cool and quick, quick, quick now, and got even quicker and better when I allowed myself to try the HDMI connection again!!! I'll stick with the HDMI unless I start having problems. Channel changing is immediate with no picture break up. Best pictures on my digital HD TV's that I've ever seen on a TV, except maybe in a showroom like at BestBuy or Circuit City where they are showing a corporate feed!!!
Hint: If you get U-verse service don't have gobs of 1975 vintage (33-year-old), Channel Master, outside antenna cord/cable (which kinda' looks like coax) running all over about 75% of your attic, under 14 inches of blown insulation, with about 8 barrel connectors in various lines, and antique splitters at obscure intersections. LOL I guess even Time Warner and Dish Network were using a good bit of these lines all these years, too. The Tech and Supervisors said the fittings, which look a good bit like coax fittings, were falling off the cables in their hands as they would go to unscrew them. They plumbed all new, properly shielded cable into the attic. IMHO, most all of the U-verse Tech guys in the Dayton, OH area are doing all they can to get the service right for you if you will just be patient with them if you have problems. It was probably about 110º to 120º in that attic today. There is NO WAY I would have been up there.

Glad to hear you stuck with it! So, it was the old antenna wiring causing a problem?
Well, good chance. LOL
You do understand it was what was being used for the AT&T lines, don't you? The lines going into the house were decent enough looking coax, but it was a different story in the attic. The coax was connected in many places to the antenna cords.
I guess I might not even have had to try (Sunday morning when the Tech was here) using the Cat 5 cables for the digital HD TVs, if we would have know. Could be the reason that the Cat 5 helped so much was simply because the digital HD TVs were taken off the crappy antenna "coax." But, since the Cat 5's were already plumbed in, I wasn't going to ask them to take them out and plumb shielded, AT&T coax for them, too. They had a big enough job on their hands.
Thanks for encouraging me to be patient, spd2demun, and for the tips and suggestions you gave me!!
