u-verse max + POTS installation question(s)

i have AT&T DSL and a standard POTS telephone line right now which i fully intend to keep, i have no interest in this being digital. i just ordered u-verse max and have a few concerns. my questions are as follows: 1) it seems that this internet service functions by making use of all 4 wires which is run per standard procedure from the NID on customer premises to their actual jack. i know for a fact that i only have 2 wires in that span. will i need to run a new wire? 2) it seems that when this service is connected with POTS on the line, the gateway you are forced to purchase from at&t acts as the filter rather than a simple, passive, inline filter as used with ADSL. is this filtering mechanism passive as well? will it continue to transmit through to the telephone if there is no power to the gateway? any help is much appreciated thank you!
