I've dumped my uverse tv, opting to keep the uverse internet. My Uverse modem and the uverse tv receiver are in seperate parts of the house connected together with coax that the installers put in. One issue I will have to address is what will replace my current use of the uverse TV RECIEVERS ETHERNET PORT as my routers internet source?? I use it to give the TV, the BluRay and the Ubuntu box their internet links. all of this is WIRED. I would like to remain in a wired state unless that is impossible. But I have hope its actually going to be easy.
I am here to get confirmation from the gurus of the uverse that my conclusions are correct. Or to have them corrected if they are off.
with what little research I have done so far - it appears that the coax connection my uverse components are using is HPNA. That leads me to beleive all I need to do is buy a HPNA Coax to Ethernet Adapter and use the coax connection that was going to the TV Reciever and put that to the new adapter instead. and then plug in the Routers upload cable into that same HPNA Coax to Ethernet Adapter's ethernet port. basically using this new adapter as a replacement for the uverse tv receiver.
There should be nothing else to do. all the dhcp and routing is handled by other components. none of that was handled by the TV RECIEVER.
I have only spotted ONE maker of said needed adapter - Actiontec. they make both a MOC and a HPNA adapter - but of course I can only use the HPNA as that is what the uverse modem is sending down the coax already.
OK, gurus - sound like I got it right? almost ? woah way off?
thanks
Harry
yes I really was programming BEFORE there was DOS.

Just be sure that the HPNA bridge you purchase works with HPNA v3 (2Wire 3800HGV-B) or HPNA v3.1 (2Wire 3801HGV, 2Wire i3812V).

I own the HPNA to Ethernet adapter that you are interested in, and my experience has been alright with it. After a few alteration to my network card (it wasn't auto-negotiating for some reason) I now get 23/0.75 consistently with the adapter. I've read elsewhere that the RG simply won't push the upload bandwidth any higher than that over HPNA, but I can't be sure. I'm going to return this adapter as soon as I can get a Cat5e line run, but for now, it is doing its job as well as I could have hoped for.
Having said all of that, there is supposedly an "official" U-Verse adapter now (this one http://www.motorola.com/Video-Solutions/US-EN/Prod
Either way, if you buy the Actiontek, and you get your full upload speed, please do let us know (so I can wonder what is wrong with my wiring).

well glad to hear I am on track and thanks for the tips and advice.
I'll be sure to double check the specs on the actiontec device.
I have a bit of experiece with actiontec products. when they work they work. however when they dont, you are likely on your own for figuring out why. probably why FRYS loves actiontec so much LOL.
anyway, I guess as its online and instores to buy I'll go the action tec route (if they pass the specs needs on the box). and if it doesnt deliver what I need - back to the store it goes. and on to where do I get the motorola.
thanks Harry
PS: I am also wondering is there a place I can BUY a used uverse tv reciever? My tv service is off and the etherport is still functioning as it did so its NOT SERVICE dependent. is there such a thing as a not-owned-by-att reciever with etherport out ?? Hmmm

It took me a minute to realize where you're going with this. You're thinking a powered-up STB in standby would function as an HNPA-Ethernet converter, even if it wasn't properly provisioned/activated by AT&T. I won't touch on the ethical arguments (beyond say there are some). I don't think it would technically work very well because the STB would sit in a cycle of continuously rebooting trying to get its software image downloaded. Even if the base firmware provided the functionality you needed, the box would continuosly interupt the connection trying to reset and try again.

well NO there would be zero ethical questions as I have intentions to only use it in its out-of-service state. hence no ethics breached. In fact I am looking for an out in the open not a hackers den online site to get one. even an att approved site. some returned that doesnt work box - whos converter is not effected by the malfunction - would be the perfect and hopefully cheap solution.
and I am not theorizing. I am stating as a fact, I am currently using my out of service uverse dvr receiver as a coax to ethernet converter. It works. However I have 2 weeks left to send this back or be billed for it. Hence my search for a replacing adapter.

Well, using your current DVR as the HPNA to Ethernet bridge with no TV service is no problem ethically. But, as you said, you only have 2 weeks left to return it.
The ethical problem comes in if you decide to buy one off eBay to do the same thing. The use of the unit as an HPNA to Ethernet bridge is not the problem -- the problem is that all STBs are the property of AT&T, and purchasing one off eBay means you're receiving stolen property.
And I do believe there may be a technical issue as was already stated in that the unit may periodically reboot, interrupting the bridging functionality.

Ya, he used a 3rd-party HPNA converter, but his used Cat3 twisted pair instead of coax. He did get it to work.
