I currently have AT&T landline and AT&T DSL service. To save money, I may be forced to dump the landline, at least for now. When the DSL service was added last year, a technician put in a separate line from a junction box at the house to where the DSL line enters the house. But there is not a dedicated DSL line running from the street to my house.
So, I assume if I cancel my landline my DSL will not work, since they share a line from the street to my house, unless AT&T proactively does something. Can this be done remotely or does it require a visit to the house? Can this be timed so there is little to no disruption of my DSL service. (I've read stories of people losing DSL for days or weeks when they cancel their landline service, something I obviously would like to avoid.)
Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.
Jeff

The POTS telephone and DSL "travel" to your home over the same pair of wires. Turning off the phone service should not affect your DSL service.

Thanks for responding Computer-Joe.
I agree that their "shouldn't" be an issue, but when you Google the topic you get multiple stories of people losing their DSL for lengthly periods when they disconnect their landline. From what I've read, there is an inference that the DSL department has to do something to make it work after the landline is disconnected.

Try contacting Alex, one of the AT&T Community Managers, and see if he can get you fixed up.

Greetings, I have a similar concern.
ATT is my current provider for DSL and the land line: {personal content removed for safety}. (I also have a second land line --but that is not changing for the moment). I am porting my phone number to a different provider than ATT and I need to "dry-loop" my DSL service. I need to separate the two services so that there will not be a loss of my DSL/Internet service after my port completes. The new provider warns:
"If your DSL service is delivered on the same line as your phone service, you must separate the two before you transfer your phone number. Ask your current provider for "stand-alone" or "dry-loop" DSL. Failure to separate the two services will result in the loss of your DSL/Internet service after your port completes."
Please advise. Tom

Hi,
I am an ATT customer with dsl and a landline that is looking for a dsl dry loop configuration. It looks like Alex may no longer be responding to these requests.
I have been a Bellsouth/ATT customer for a long time and would like to continue getting ATT dsl. Any help with a seamless transition would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I hope Alex or someone can help us, too!
Hi,
We currently have 1.5 DSL,home phone service, and cell phone service with At&T. We want 3.0 DSL for the advertised price (on this website) of 19.95 a month for DSL without home phone service (Dry Loop).
We called At&t and were told-
a.) We can not get 3.0 DSL because our area is scheduled for a "forced migration" to UVERSE and the only upgrade could be to 12.0 DSL (for $29.95/month). The CSR insisted her system would not permit her to process a 3.0 DSL upgrade for $19.95.
B.) The CSR transferred us to the retention office when we mentioned Comcast as an alternative. The retention department said they could upgrade us to 3.0 DSL (but not at $19.95, as that was strictly an internet offer). The rep. said to get that price we would have to order online.
C.) We placed an order for 3.0 DSL online (through this website). A tech came to our home today to say he was installing the new line for dry loop. He told us our current phone number would be replaced by a new number and we could cancel the old number when he transferred us to 3.0 DSL. He also told us that when the old number was cancelled we would lose our current e-mail accounts. This was not acceptable to us so we cancelled the dry loop order.
D.) Now we are back to trying to figure out how to get our DSL service at the higher speed and advertised cost without losing our email. At the same time, we no longer want the home phone service. We have absolutely no desire to add to our "bundle" or bill. No Uverse, no digital phone, no joy of willy nilly placement of televisions. Just dry loop dsl and our cell phone service.
As a long term (40+ years if you count the Bell South golden years) customer we can't believe this is too complex for us to understand or AT&T to implement. If 12.0 DSL is available at $29.95, surely 3.0 at $19.95 is possible. It would be inconvenient but not impossible to forward our e-mail to another e-mail account, but is this really the only way?
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Folks,
I am also in need of separating my landline from my DSL line and obtaining a "dry-loop" DSL configuration. At an undetermined future date, I will turn off the Landline because my need of the landline is becoming less and less especially since I have a AT&T Cell phone account ![]()
The problem I am encountering is that it appears that my only option is to switch to U-verse, which I do not need or want. I am happy with my AT&T DSL and would like to keep it, but if my only AT&T option is to go with U-verse for my internet solution, I will need to switch to an alternate provider. Please provide any advice or tips on how I can solve this issue and continue to be a happy AT&T customer.
Cheers,
Garth

I called CSR today and tried to see if there is a smooth way to "switch" my current tranditional DSL to a Dry Loop DSL. The answer was NO. They told me that I will have to "open" a new account for Dry Loop DSL service and my rate will be more than doubled so that any attempt to remove my landline service will not make much economic sense. The alternative is to order their new U-verse Internet service with a bit lower rate. But I will have to pay a $50 activation fee and sign a 12-month contract. ![]()
