Hi community,
Does anyone knows how to cancel AT&T Internet? I heard from some people that you need your bill with your account number, and the last four digits of social society number. But is that all you need? Because when I setup for the first time for the Internet, I didn't know much about computers, and forgot the user email and password. Does anyone know what you need to cancel it?

This is a user support forum. The people on here are AT&T customers like yourself, not employees. If you want to talk to AT&T you will need to call in. As far as I know though, you are correct about what is needed in your first post.

Last four of social should be all the verification you need. Yes you can cancel both DSL and phone at same time.
The main thing to do is switch back to a paper bill if you're on paperless billing and make sure they have a viable address they can send any final bills to. You should also call back about 20 days later to verify that they did indeed cancel the service. Problems that come up when canceling AT&T are they sometimes do not turn off the service as reqested and continue billing, or there are final bills, and if they can't get a bill to you (and they don't seem to try very hard) they will turn it over to a collections agency.

Thanks for reply. We always pay by paper billing because my parents don't like paying thigns online. As long as we pay the final bill before the due date, is it fine? Also, I heard people say that they will give you a confirmation number when you cancel the serivce. What is that number for?

Confirmation numbers don't really seem to mean anything to AT&T. The main thing is to make sure the final bill is in fact the last bill.

Thanks Computer-Joe. One last question. Do you have any tips for doing this process? Becuase I see so much people having problems when canceling AT&T service, that I just want to make sure i did everything right. Thank you.

Well, I guess your best bet, to get it accomplished correctly the first time, would be to call the Retention Department. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, as their job is to try to make the customer stay, but in my opinion they are the most competant people working for AT&T's customer service.
The quickest way in is to call the 1-800-288-2020 number, confirm your phone number when it asks (if calling from your home), and then just keep saying "none of those" to the rest of the prompts and it will connect you to a real human within a minute or two. Tell them to transfer you to the Retention Department.
As I mentioned earlier, the main thing is to make sure that they have an address that will get any remaining bills to you and keep an eye out for them. Ther has been cases of mystery final bills generated up to six months later and if you do not receive that bill, it gets sent to collections which can result in a downgrade of your credit rating.
If you're canceling because you're moving make sure to use the post office's address forwarding service and when your canceling tell them your new address.

Thanks for your help. I will see what I will do when I get my new internet service.
