3G Upgrade Schedule (Lewistown​, PA)?

2009 was the last post I seen on this for Lewistown, PA. It is now 2012 and still not 3G. Verizon has had this service and I am getting impatient for AT&T to provide. I am considering moving my cellular service to Verizon since most of my use area is Lewistown and Mifflintown some Mount Union and Huntingdon. Seems we are getting forgotten here!

I feel the same way.  I live in Clearfield, PA and only have the Edge for ATT while Verizon has 3G.  I get tired of seeing ATT advertise 4G when they do not have 3G everywhere.  I was told by a staff person in State College ATT store that he heard ATT would have 3G everywhere this year so they can expand 4G.  I want 3G NOW!!!

As the original poster of the 2009 post, I can sympathize.  The last time I stopped at the State College ATT store, they told me June 2012 was the estimated date of completion for Lewistown to go 3G.

I agree, AT&T has done a miserable job of keeping their data network in a position to remotely compete with Verizon.  They can boast all they want about 4G or 3G...  If they have Edge in many of the second teir markets then it really doesn't matter what they have elsewhere.  

Verizon has 4G LTE in State College already.  AT&T has very very very limited 4G (not LTE) coverage in downtown SC.

It's all very discouraging.  If Verizon used something other than CDMA for their voice network, I'd probably switch.  CDMA sounds like crap and cuts out more so than GSM (AT&T).

It's frustrating to say the least and AT&T really doesn't seem concerned about their widespread EDGE problem.

The widespread EDGE coverage is going to be removed from the spectrum for more 3G and 4G/LTE coverage. Since At&t didn't succeed in the merge with T-Mobile, this is going to be At&t solution.

Did you read this in a corporate strategy somewhere?  I knew that since the merger failed they were going to have mutual roaming agreements for data.  This helps AT&T in the metro areas because T-Mobile had a decent 4G infrastructure in the metro areas.

I'm not sure it helps them in the rural and mid-sized markets though.  T-Mobile's data network was pretty abysmal in the same areas that AT&T was either weak or equally abysmal.

Do you know if they have a site upgrade plan for PA?  Which markets will have their cell sites upgraded first?

Also, It sounds like EDGE is (2.5G but included in 3G). That's crap if I'm reading this correctly.

Doug4772, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. But AT&T doesn't include EDGE in 3G. So it looks like your area will be converted very shortly to 3G goodness

Edge is not 3G and is not displayed as such on their maps.

I've never thought of EDGE as anything resembling a data connection... Let alone 3G. It was a weirdly worded line in the article that one of the previous posters submitted that referred to EDGE as better than 2G and potentially classified under 3G. If it wasn't for my 22% account discount, I might have switched to Verizon by now. Although, At&t has much better voice coverage in the lewistown area. I'm glad I had a little patience. -Doug

I live in Lewistown as well, and the EDGE network here is unbearable, if not practically unusable. I can see us getting 3G here very soon, considering state college has 4G and it's pretty close. So my fingers are crossed, because I feel like I should get 3G after paying for an expensive data plan.

Actually, AT&T is in the process right now of upgrading Lewistown to 3G! That's why the service has been so bad these past few days

How can we be sure? how long with it take and when can we expect to see signs of 3G in the lewistown area?

I have heard rumors around town of this possible upgrade coming "soon"... Although I have been hearing this for the last 5 years, not as much as I have recently though... Im not gonna hold my breath untill i hear an Official word OR accually see it happen, which would be AWESOME!

My mom contacted AT&T, because we're getting bad service at my house. They told her that they are indeed working on the towers at this moment, and are upgrading them to 3G

I was told by AT&T that the whole area...surrounding State College, Lewistown, Burnham, Port Royal...etc will be lit up with 3G by the end of July.

Lewistown may be one of the first on the list... service has been poor as of late.  I do not doubt they are working on the towers.

Well that's good. Service here has been pretty bad, bad enough that it's gotten people in the area talking about it. I just wish AT&T would shoot us a text or something to let us know.
