In the past I have rented Iridium satellite phones and data devices from a company called Roadpost when traveling to rural areas abroad. There is some speculation that it may not work 100% on cruise ships due to the ship's radar acting as interference... I noticed this was the case when I was near major airports and tried to use the Sat phone..
Just food for thought. Can be expensive though. AT&T does have a business sat hybrid phone as well but it's expensive.
