Hi. Hopefully somebody from AT&T will read this. My grandfather wants a new phone and he said to use his upgrade. Well his upgrade isn't due until 8/4. So I called AT&T to see if they would let him upgrade early and they said yes as long as it's over the phone with AT&T. Well I didn't quite like the idea of doing that considering I would like my grandfather to demo the phone first to see if he likes it. (My grandfather is old age and I'd hate to continually send the phone back and request a different one if he doesn't like it. It's happened before). I was wanting to take him to best buy and try some phones out that he likes. Is there anyway I could possibly do this for my grandfather? He's been agitated with a motorola razr that he's had for a while. Hopefully an AT&T rep will do something. He's been with AT&T for almost 7 years (10 years for me).

He should become eligible on the first of the month of his upgrade date.
As far as having him try phones first so he can decide what he wants, go ahead and take him to Best Buy or an AT&T store. He can try any phone without obligation to purchase. Then when he decides what he likes, you can order it over the phone.

Sounds like a good idea, but AT&T is so expensive. Since I'm paying for my grandfather's phone and upgrade fee, I need to try to get the best deal possible. I understand AT&T wants me to buy the phone through them so they can make money off the phone. They are still getting the extra the $10 a month for 2 years plus the $36 fee. I might have to wait till the 1st I guess.

Max is right - you can go into any store and test the phones so your Grandfather can see what works best for him. That is a great way to make sure he gets the right type of phone for him.
The person you spoke with asked you to place the order over the phone so they can process the upgrade early for you. If you were to go to a different retail store, they may not be able to do that for you.
You can always go to a regular AT&T retail store so an AT&T employee can help you. They will be able to see your account and look at any notes the previous person left. Here is a link to locate a retail store near you: http://www.att.com/storelocator/
I hope this information helps, please let us know if you need any more info!
