Bringing my own phone to GoPhone

So I have an older Samsung Fligh (SGH-a797)  that I would like to setup as a just a plain old voice use phone.  It's not unlocked, but is ATT branded.  It's never been activated, new in the box.  Is it possible for me to go buy a gophone SIM and setup billing and then just put the SIM in and be ready to go?   Or do I need to unlock the phone before this will work?

There may be a contract attached to the phone.

Shouldn't be.  It's a phone I bought man years ago with the intention of adding to my account and never did.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you but I am not sure of the state of the phone. I don't know whether or not there is a lock on unactivated contract phone to prevent using it as a GoPhone.

Normally I guess that an out of contract phone could be used as a GoPhone.

I wish someone with AT&T regular phones could post an answer.

When I had prepaid I used various AT&T phones without any issues. The only time I had a problem is when I bought a prepaid phone with a sim. In that case the sim was locked to only work on that prepaid phone until 6 months prepaid service had passes. It was nothing a five minute phone call couldn't fix though. My guess is that there shouldn't be am issue but it's hard to tell until you actually use it.
