Your phone is tuned to T-Mobile frequencies by design. You can get Nexus 1 phones with AT&T frequencies too. If you wanted a phone with all 3G frequencies, checkout Nokia phones - read the spec and confirm them with Nokia.

My phone as is unlocked from factory, that’s the way Google sells them and it’s a GSM phone so changing the sim card out is all that should be needed to get on ATT’s 3G.
Looks like T-mo has a better deal on pay as you go plans and don’t screw you on data by giving you edge instead of 3G.
Back to T-mo i go...

Google released 2 versions of the Nexus One in the US. One that's compatible with AT&T 3G (UMTS/WCDMA 850/1900) and one that's compatible with T-Mobile 3G (AWS 1700/2100). It doesn't matter if your phone is unlocked or not. The T-Mobile version doesn't have the necessary radios for AT&T 3G.
However, T-Mobile does have better prepaid deals. If you're already getting good coverage with T-Mobile, I have no idea why you'd want to switch to AT&T.

Thank you so much for the clear and simple answer.
But I am still confused, isn’t 3G ATT and T-mo use GSM? I have access to ATT’s Edge which is from what I understand WCDMA?

It was just explained to you. They are both GSM carriers, but for 3G/4G data, they use different frequencies. Your phone must match their frequencies. If it does not, you are stuck on 2G/EDGE.
AT&T uses 850 & 1900 MHz
T-Mobile uses 1700 & 2100 MHz

US Carrier Voice Freq 3G 4G
| AT&T | 850 (Band 5)/ 1900(Band 2) | 850 / 1900 | Band 17 (700MHz)/AWS (1700/2100 MHz) | GSM

US Carrier Voice Freq 3G 4G Notes
| T-Mobile USA | 1900 | AWS(1700/2100 MHz)/PCS (1900) | AWS (1700/2100 MHz) | GSM |

I am also facing a similar. issue. I am getting only Edge network connectivty on my HTC Incredible S mobile. The specifications of the mobile says that is supports the frequency bands GSM - 850, 900, 1800, 1900; UMTS - 2100. Is there any chance of 3G internt working on it. Posts in this thread say that AT&T uses 850 & 1900 MHz, then why am I getting only Edge(2G) connectivity.
Is it a possiblity that certian frequencey bands though supported for voice communication but may not be supported for data(3G) commnication.
